chipwhich
Ok I have a tax question!!So I'm doing my DC taxes but because my W2 was only for VA I don't have my agency's DC tax ID number. I can ask HR about this tomorrow, but does anyone know some place online that I could look it up? Why do you need your agencys DC tax id number? What makes you think the company you work for has one? What form are you putting that on?

Turbo tax asks for it. I'm filing taxes in DC and VA but my W2 only covers VA so that's the only ID number I have.

Were you a resident the entire year in DC? Or were you a resident in both places? I am pretty sure if you were in DC the entire year you would only file DC taxes, not Va, although Turbo Tax will want you to buy both states and try to make you file both. As for the DC Tax ID Number, you won't find that online. Depending on your company, I would be suprised if anyone in HR will be able to help you either. If they can, let us know. chipwhich
Ren, Also, I believe that you can complete your DC taxes without having that number? I don't think turbo tax will require it????

Madison Redskin
I love doing my taxes. Yeah, I said it. I pay a TON of property taxes (about $8K/yr.) and mortgage interest (about $24K). When you deduct $32K from your taxable income, you're going to get paid. I realize I'm giving the government an interest-free loan, but I love getting a big sum back from the government in March or so.

That just means you are probably doing the right thing. Paying too little during the year sucks, because you end up having to cough up a wad by 4/15. Paying too much during the year probably isn't so smart, because getting a refund check simply means that you gave an interest-free loan to the federal government. LaxBuddy21
Did mine at the end of February and got about $12,000 back. Hooray for first time home buyers credit and getting married! Funny how much more motivation you have to do taxes when you are getting a lot back!
PROSCOUT
Anybody want to stop paying taxes? Do what I did. I got a home business and write off my apartment, internet, cable, electric bill, phone bill, water bill, plus the federal goverment pays me 50 cents for every mile I put on my car, even when I go to the grocery store or vacation. Matter of fact, it went up to 58 cents per mile during the gas crises. You don't even have to work the business if you don't want just show you have one. Keep your own money. Here is one link if it helps anybody. www.freetoworkathome.net

Well there is a little more to it than that. If you have car signs that promote your business and you hadn out business cards when you go to Walmart, then YES you do get the milage. Yes you absolutely do. Same if you go to the grocery store or on vacation. Its the law. Tax Law.
chipwhich
You don't even have to work the business if you don't want just show you have one. Per your quote above and this: Whoever is giving you that information is giving you BAD information. Maybe you can scam this for a year or two. When the IRS sees no income from your business and sees you writing off your mileage, apt, home office, etc, etc, you are going to set off red flags and get nailed. If it was legal, everyone would form an LLC/Corp for nothing and just write off all their expenses and not work the business. Problem is, it's illegal. Yeah, claiming expenses such as rent and mileage for a home based business with no income  ... he should write a letter to the IRS saying "AUDIT ME". What you are doing is VERY shady. You may be able to get away with it, but after 3 years of losses, Uncle Sam won't buy it. Why not just contribute like most of us Americans, and pay your damn taxes? That's my main gripe with Illegal Aliens - I'll put you in the same category. And that Link looks like a scam.......GL showing that to the Feds....
