SolidSnake84
I know it was about a month back where I posted that Jeff Garcia had retired, but i just saw on CBS news that The Oakland Raiders signed him today to compete with JaMarcus Russell for the starting job. I think JaMarcus is really close to becoming an NFL bust at this point, and losing the job to Garcia (which he most certainly will), will be the nail in his coffin. Al Davis and Company love old QB's that play well..I believe it is a 2 year deal, but terms of the deal weren't immediatley available. http://http://cbs5.com/sports/raiders.sign.garcia.2.977549.html

elkabong82
Garcia just has to stay with the pirate theme, lol. I guess that means Garcia knows he's about done, since players typically go to Oakland for the same reason seagulls go out to sea, lol.

brianm23
Where are you getting this "compete for starting job" stuff at? http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4047125 The 39-year-old Garcia is expected to back up JaMarcus Russell, who is solidly entrenched as the starter. Mickalino
You know what would be funny ? After the way Gruden and Garcia had all their hissy fits together in Tampa, is if Oakland then fires former interim coach Tom Cable, then brings back Jon Gruden to replace him, and Gruden and Garcia are stuck with each other again. Well after Oakland finishes in last place that would give them an oppurtunity to draft Gruden's man-love Tim Tebow if he likes him as much as he claims to. Not that I'm saying this would actually happen, but was Gruden/Davis' divorce ugly like most of the others? I wasn't nearly as into football back then so I can't recall the details. SolidSnake84
http://http://www.nbcbayarea.com/sports/football/Exclusive-Garcia-Negotiating-With-Raiders.html That article was posted earlier in the day. It says that Garcia will be given the chance to compete with Russell. The 39 year-old quarterback will have the opportunity to compete for the starting position with JaMarcus Russell, though Garcia will likely serve as a backup. Other articles about his signing mention that he had several other offers, however Oakland was the only team who offered a legitimate chance to start. Oldskool
Garcia is a misfit to what the Raiders and Ted Tollner's passing game want to accomplish. Garcia is a WCO QB through and through and most likely signed with Oakland because no one else would give him a shot at this stage of his career. Chachie
I don't get it. Garcia is a WCO QB through and through. Which is why I think this is a move designed only to light a fire under Russell, not to replace him in the starting line-up. Garcia is as good a back-up as a team can have. Great game manager. Laxpunk2006
Which is why I think this is a move designed only to light a fire under Russell, not to replace him in the starting line-up. Garcia is as good a back-up as a team can have. Great game manager. Exactly, nobody in Oakland wants Garcia to start other than Garcia. What they want is competition and a mentor to push Russel into realizing his potential and what it takes to be an NFL QB. Garcia is a hard worker and has overcome not having the physical tools coaches and execs look for in a QB. Russel happens to have all those tools he's just a knucklehead, so Garcia should be able to teach him a thing or two. Worst case scenario Russel sucks it up or gets hurt and Garcia can at least be competitive managing the game and keeping them in position to win without hurting them. I don't think it's the best career choice for Garcia but he likely didn't have many other options. I do however think it's a great signing for Oakland.
