Figured this was suitable for others to check out in the tailgate area as well.

In an announcement framed as a step toward fulfilling baseball's promise to the District, the Nationals announced Saturday a series of initiatives aimed at Washington's high school students.

"Each high school will have their own day at the ballpark," Nationals President Stan Kasten said, describing a program that will guarantee a ticket for each student at that school on its given day at Nationals Park.

All 12 high schools that have baseball teams will be given the opportunity to host a practice at Nationals Park free of charge. "They'll be using our field, our cages, our screens out on the field," Kasten said. "It'll be just like a big league practice."

Four schools have already scheduled their practices.

"We do many many community programs and as many as we do, we always want to do more," Kasten said, flanked by Mayor Fenty, several members of the DC council and students from nine schools at a press conference before Saturday's exhibition game versus the Orioles.

"We are absolutely thrilled with the opportunity that will be created for our young people," D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray said. Gray, who played ball at Dunbar High School and has taken batting practice with the Nationals more than once, looked at the announcement as a chance to "rejuvenate" baseball in D.C. "This will be just the stimulus package we need to get them going."

"Don't put a price tag on baseball," Councilman Harry Thomas said during an impassioned statement that showered praise on the Lerner family for its commitment to creating opportunities for young people in the District.

"We could not be prouder, representing this city, representing the District," Kasten said.

maybe the highschoolers can teach them how to win a game.

From my admittedly limited knowledge of D.C. public sports, that will only be the case if Wilson practices. I think they've won the last 20 DC public school championships in baseball. I could be wrong, but it's some outrageous number like that.
