Frank Hanrahan: Redskins were 10 minutes away from getting Cutler

Frank was on the Locker Room and told his story. Frank was called by someone from ESPN saying "you guys just got Cutler, we just got word from John Clayton, come on Sportscenter and give us the reaction from D.C". Once this happened he was ready to break the news and 5 minutes later ESPN told him that the Bears got him.

Regardless of what you think of Cutler, we were 10 minutes away from getting him. Bears literally took the deal 10 minutes before he would have been with us.

Cutler playing in the windy city is going to be laughable. they should have spent those picks on offensive line and defense.

tough defense and running the ball is how the bears have got it done. Cutler is going to struggle far more with the conditions in chicago then in denver

this is a bit misleading. i dont think they were 10 mins from getting him. its more likely the media cats simply had it wrong as to the final destination. this sounds like the same thing he said on sports reporters yesterday and thats how it came across to me. not that they were close to getting him, more that folks didnt have accurate info...

The great Brett Farve had trouble playing in Chicago on a windy day, it effects the opponents too. On a good day or on the road this guy can play with the best of them.

Agreed. Cutler is a very good QB, but no player in the NFL not named Manning or Brady is worth that much.

Exactly. I'm not going to pretend like Cutler sucks because he doesn't and I won't pretend like Jason Campbell is the right guy for the job because we're not sure yet, but two 1st rounders are definitely too much to give up for Jay Cutler.

Well. Our first this year is worth significantly more at 13 than the Bears' at 18, so just because the Bears gave 2 firsts, a third, and dumped a qb, doesn't necessarily mean that we were giving more than 2 firsts and dumping a qb.

Who knows what the real deal was going to be. I don't care any more. I would have liked Cutler for Campbell in a 1-1, which would never have happened. I would have liked a Cutler for Campbel and a first, which also would never have happened. But you just don't trade multiple #1s in a deal. Whenever I see deals with multiple #1s, I think back to the Bullets / Wizards in the 1990s and their lack of first rounders because of trades. It just perpetuates bad situations.

He's got talent.

But I don't know if he's been very good.

He has thrown a lot of costly interceptions, made some critical mistakes in games. As you said, he's not tier-1. I'd say he's a good tier-2 QB.

His negative X-factor is his attitude though. Man his attitude is sour. I don't like how he said he has the strongest arm in the league. I understand the QB has to have confidence and everything like that, but I never heard Favre or Elway or anyone with reportedly strong arms SAY they have the strongest arm in the league. You just heard it from the receivers.

Add that to his tantrum and other reports... ugh. Say what you will about Romo sits to pee, but he tried to keep his team together with TO on it, which is saying a lot. He was able to keep a smile on his face while dealing with all the garbage around him. I'll give him that much. I'm not sold on Cutler's ability to lead given his character issues (and this is something NFL Execs reportedly also have concerns about).

But that's all just a media smokescreen. The Redskins weren't really pursuing Cutler. LaCanfora and Keim were just making stuff up. At least that's what I read here...

The Redskins called about Cutler, but weren't minutes away from getting him. We were interested. No one has said otherwise. The proximity, however, was not close. Not a single media member mentioned the Bears until the trade was formally announced by Denver.

People who never even knew the Bears were in the mix ought not be considered the people you believe entirely when told we were. We would have loved Cutler, no doubt. But, not at the prices discussed and not as late in the day as people think.
