Redskins' Incompetence on Display Again

The Redskins are no strangers to offseason news, but we usually have to wait until October to see that they've totally screwed the pooch yet again. A pair of early-April stories that surfaced again today make me think this might be the best year yet for Redskins' incompetence. Given this organization's track record, I'm thrilled to see the new depths they might achieve.

hblahblah "Mr. Cerrato, most adults aren't this captivated by the birdie."

The first and smaller news story is that the Titans are strongly considering filing tampering charges against the Redskins, who reached an agreement in principle (and a lot of principal) with DT Albert Haynesworth a mere hours after free agency began. The Titans have asked the league to conduct an investigation. Already, Skins GM/lapdog Vinny Cerrato has made comments on his radio show that could be construed as a reach-out to Haynesworth before the period opened. On March 11, Skins KR/RB Rock Cartwright said "I kind of had an idea they were going to sign [Haynesworth] anyways ... One of my teammates said they had the same agent and ... he said they had been talking." Haynesworth and WR failure Malcolm Kelly have the same agent. The quote and tidbit about the shared agent come from Fanhouse.

The league is notoriously bad about enforcing the tampering rules, but maybe there'll be a little fire behind all this smoke. The penalty is usually forfeiture of draft picks, but it's rare for the Skins to have many anyway.

The bigger story is that the Skins publicly swung and missed in their attempt to land promising, young, petulant QB Jay Cutler in a trade with Denver. The Skins incumbent QB, Jason Campbell, has long been the target of Redskins fan ire. Many even would prefer Todd Collins. In a related note, most Skins fans are somewhere between delusional and stupid.

Campbell has reacted well to the news that he was wanted less than an unpopular malcontent whose rookie head coach tried to replace him with Matt Cassel within minutes of taking the job. "Hey Jason! We loved you all along!" That doesn't work on girlfriends, and I bet it doesn't work on quarterbacks either. At least they didn't go after Kyle Boller.

More than most seasons, I can't wait for 2009 to kick off. The Redskins appear headed for an implosion above and beyond their usual.

Yeah unfortunately if if his fans are stupid and delusional comment came from anything seen on this board the last 3 days, I'd have to entirely agree with him.. I didn't say a whole lot about the situation as I was kind of in the middle, and I'll be the first to admit I'm usually the first to open my mouth about this sort of thing, and I've on plenty of occasions looked stupid in the passed as we all have, but man, this board reached entirely new heights of ignorance and stupidity these last few days. Even guys that should know better and that I've depending on to give me some balance and intelligent perspective in the past, were saying some outlandishly dumb things..

Let's do a decision tree here because I am amazed at how many people are appalled by what the redskins did here and have no clue why.

Decision #1 - Do we want to pursue Cutler? Yes or no. Its really simple. That is the first decision the FO had in front of them. They answered yes. Is that in and of itself wrong? Most people agree he would be a significant upgrade from Campbell if you could get him. With Denver coming out and saying he was on the trading block and Cutler all put promising he wasn't going to play for Denver, they probably thought they could get him for Campbell and a first. This decision is not in and of itself crazy.

What if they chose no? Again debatable. They could have said "its his contract year, his second full year in the offense, him and Zorn live or die together this year. Let's let them take their shot and we will go get em a tackle to give him more than a second to look up field and maybe one of our three first day draft picks will be able to beat out one of our old 5 foot 9 recievers. Would have been a fine choice as well but 25 year old pro bowlers are arguably even less risky than Andre Smith at 13 this year. If your getting cutler, you don't need Jason so he is a non-factor so its the pick that your really giving away and your probably willing to give away a 3rd or something next year too to solidify your Qb position hopefully for a decade. Its not a bad decision in a vacuum.

Decision #2 - What will we offer them? I outline what they were probably thinking above. They obviously didn't offer more than 2 first round picks.

Decision #3 - When should we bow out of this even though our Qb has been embarrassed as well as us? I am actually impressed that Snyder didn't get so engulfed in pounding his chest to get his shiny toy that he gave up 3 firsts and Cooley. I mean cmon, 2 #1's for a guy who abandons every single one of his teamates because his 32 year old petrified coach fielded a call about his former QB security blanket? Really? The guy is a flake. 2 #1 picks at least one of which is guaranteed to be in the top half of the first round. The decision to back off beyond a #1 and Campbell was the right decision.

So when everyone is flipping out because they went after Cutler, didn't get him and now look like "jackasses" i have to ask has everyone forgotten about the element of time?

At each point in time they acted reasonably. It was reasonably to INQUIRE about Cutler. It was reasonable to even be willing to pull the trigger for the right price and i was reasonable to say "thanks but not thanks" when it got too pricey - in fact, I don't think i have ever seen Danny exercise this muscle.

Where exactly was the mistake made?

Well there you have it. Rock Cartwright heard through the grapevine that Haynesworth was going to be a Redskin, because Rock knows a guy who talked to his agent. Tampering without a doubt!

Absolute conclusive evidence in my book. Now if they can just find "that guy" whoever the hell he is and bring him before congress to testify. Maybe they can fit him in between General Motors and AIG during those Congressional hearings.
