Star-Telegram: Patrick Crayton needs to stop talking now

Sorry about that. I missed one.

Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton was apparently not accounted for in my Sunday column mood-o-meter check of Valley Ranch, where several individuals from inside the Irving bunker spoke optimistically of a new day a-dawning in atmosphere, team concept and football focus.

And reading the departure of Terrell Owens into those positives would certainly be accurate, but as those team employees pointed out, the Cowboys had/have issues that went beyond one loco/loud receiver.

But then along comes Crayton on Monday, which was the official start of the team’s off-season conditioning program, and he told our man Clarence Hill this:

"As a group, there are no more excuses, no more scapegoats to put the blame on ... there is nobody here to point the finger at. You understand the business. They made it more Jason Garrett and Tony Romo sits to pee friendly. Again, no more excuses."

Although thinly disguised, that’s obviously one last ode to Owens from his pal Crayton. And one more backdoor shot at his boss, offensive coordinator Garrett, and his quarterback, Romo sits to pee. Big mistake, Patrick. Maybe even a fatal career mistake, at least as far as a local football career goes.

Of course, when December hell descended upon the team last season, among the biggest finger-pointers was Crayton himself. As with Owens, he was scapegoating and back-stabbing Romo sits to pee.

Patrick has a very short memory. In the same year, 2008, Crayton had two huge receiver blunders in that January playoff game against the New York Giants, and was probably more to blame for that loss than any one player or coach.

Romo sits to pee never finger-pointed Crayton for that. Neither did Garrett.

Crayton is always a lively quote, and I’d classify him as a good guy. And he’s certainly not the only player who attached himself to Owens, but if he’s dumb enough to keep talking on that subject, then he’ll be gone soon. As will others.

No more excuses? You’re right, Patrick.

But there were NO excuses last season or the season before, no matter what Wade Phillips says. On an individual basis, there are no excuses for any player, and that includes the mild career production of Crayton. If Owens’ presence here was so important in drawing coverage, why didn’t Crayton catch more passes when he was a starter?

Jerry Jones surprised many of us, starting with Owens and yours truly, when he made the decision to dump No. 81. I certainly didn’t see that coming, not from a dug-in guy like Jerry, and lost side bets because Jones did the unexpected.

But Jerry also delivered an ultimatum to the locker room when he gave Owens the boot. He wants a change in atmosphere, team concept and football focus. And if the head coach or assistant coaches aren’t strong enough to handle that, then Jones will.

Even Owens still seems shellshocked that he’s gone.

What follows is the text of what Terrell said Sunday on Canadian TV about his sudden exit from Valley Ranch:

Question: You said, "I really don’t think it was the owner’s decision to let me go." What did you mean by that?

Owens’ answer: "Because I know wholeheartedly he wanted me there. There were some guys ... there were people in particular, that I know got in his son’s ear ... that’s Stephen Jones ... that kinda maybe pressured him to make that decision.

"For that, you know, it’s sad because you let two or three people conspire to get me out of a situation where, after the season’s end, you’re looking at the possibility of a new stadium, the makeup and the nucleus that we have to compete for a championship, a legitimate chance to compete for a championship ... it’s hurtful, especially for myself."

(Compete for a championship? Huh? How ’bout win a damn playoff game first?)

Owens continued by saying he attempted to head Jerry off at the pass when end-of-season speculation surfaced about him being released. A Stephen Jones quote that the team was "evaluating Owens" seemed to concern No. 81.

"I was kinda surprised by that," said Owens, "and I end up having a couple conversations with Jerry, and he assured me I wasn’t going anywhere."

Later, Owens amended it to Jerry "pretty much" assured him he would stay. "It’s just disappointment ... disappointment," he added.

Asked to name the "two or three" conspiracy members, Owens noted, "At this point in time, I really don’t want to get into that. I’m not mad. Disappointed, yeah. But hey — I’ve moved on. It hasn’t been a great transition because I had so many ties there and I developed so many good friendships there ... it’s not going to get out of my system until I’m back on the football field."

Oh, yes. Owens will soon name his names, right or wrong. Romo sits to pee, for one, can expect the McNabb-Garcia treatment. And everybody except Dallas cop Robert Powell will be included, although don’t necessarily rule out that fool once Owens does what he does best. Finger-point and back-stab.

The two people Terrell can blame are himself and Jerry. Only Jerry could make Owens disappear, and he did.

Unless the Patrick Craytons of Valley Ranch figure that out, and in a hurry, they will also vanish.

I lived in the DFW area for just over year in the past... Galloway and Mosley are basically only good sports guy up there.. always to the point... Galloway, even though he does like to blow up stuff to make it interesting, has a valid point on most of his rants...

Man I cannot stand Patrick Crayton.

Dude gets on every last nerve.

I remember a few years back, Parcells claimed he had the best set of hands on the team.

Now he struggles to make routine catches, barely can get open ... and runs his mouth non stop.

I still don't forgive him for that HUGE drop against New York in the playoffs/

Patrick Crayton hasn't shown anyone that he can be the guy otherwise he would have been the guy. He is just another guy that can back up his talk with production. He will be gone next year if not this year if he keeps talking about this issue. That is really the Cowboys problem. They talk to much and they believe the media hype. Keep talking Crayton. You will become just like your friend TO and become the cancer that they get rid of. Until you become an elite receiver you need to keep your mouth shut and learn what it takes to become one.

Patrick Crayton = Freddie Mitchell

It's amazing how the guy with the most mouth turns out to be the biggest disappointment. Just shut your pis hole and play ball. That's what the greatest do; i.e Monk , Harrison, Stalworth (John not Donte) and now Fitzgerald.
