IRVING — With the beginning of their off-season conditioning program on Monday, the Dallas Cowboys have officially put the 2008 season and the decision to release wide receiver Terrell Owens in the past.

The Cowboys are putting all their energy toward gearing for next season.

And they have a motto: no more excuses, no more scapegoats, no more pointing the finger.

"All of that is in the past," receiver Patrick Crayton said. "As a group, there are no more excuses, no more scapegoats to put the blame on. It’s all on us that are here to get the job done. There is nobody here to point the finger at. You understand the business. They made it more [offensive coordinator] Jason Garrett and [quarterback] Tony Romo sits to pee friendly. Again, no more excuses."

Owens had run-ins with Garrett, Romo sits to pee and tight end Jason Witten last year, fracturing the locker room. Owner Jerry Jones has acknowledged that his decision to release Owens was an attempt, in part, to make the team more Romo sits to pee friendly.

But the departure of Owens has also made the Cowboys’ offense friendlier to the other wide receivers, including Crayton, who caught 39 passes last season after catching 50 in 2007.

There is an opportunity for him along with receivers Roy Williams, Miles Austin and Sam Hurd to catch more passes.

But what comes with that opportunity is pressure to fill the void in production created by Owens’ absence. Owens was the only receiver in the league to catch at least 10 touchdowns passes the past three seasons.

"I don’t feel any pressure," Crayton said. "I look forward to it. It’s great for us. That’s what I want anyway. You want the opportunity to get more balls and make more plays to help your team win."

Crayton acknowledged the atmosphere on the team and in the locker room will be different without Owens. But he said it’s part of the game and the Cowboys are looking ahead, not behind.

"It’s all business," Crayton said. "You move forward. We are moving forward."

Training camp update

The Cowboys will report for training camp in San Antonio during the final week in July. The exact date has not been set.

Other key off-season dates include:

A rookie minicamp is set for May 1-3, just a week after the NFL Draft (April 25-26).

Organized team activity days are set for May 19-21, 26-28, June 2-4 and 8-10.

A mandatory minicamp will be June 16-18 before the team goes on vacation.

Sounds Jerry-licious.

Patrick Crayton talks more than any other receiver who has done nothing in his career. He talks mad smack, then disappears in the crunch. Remember the drops in the playoffs against the Giants? After spouting off in the media all week? But he will put up mad numbers in the preseason!

Crayton is my favorite puke player.

By not calling anyone out, he just called everyone out.

Awesome.

And should be the last one doing so.

While I love the kid, his drop vs. the Giants in the 2007 playoff game is up there with one of the biggest drops in the history of the Cowboys.

He catches that, Dallas most likely wins that game and changes history.

Shut up and get the job done first kid.

Did Crayton take a shot at Romo sits to pee and Garrett?

March 31, 2009

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

A story by Clarence E. Hill in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is receiving a lot of play on local radio in Dallas this afternoon. Hill spoke with Cowboys wide receiver and noted T.O. disciple Patrick Crayton about the moves the club has made this offseason, and he had some interesting things to say.

"All of that is in the past," receiver Crayton told Hill. "As a group, there are no more excuses, no more scapegoats to put the blame on. It's all on us that are here to get the job done. There is nobody here to point the finger at. You understand the business. They made it more Jason Garrett and Tony Romo sits to pee friendly. Again, no more excuses."

On the surface, it seems that Crayton may be taking a shot at Jerry Jones' decision to release T.O. But I've spoken with Hill this afternoon, and he doesn't think that was Crayton's intent at all. Here's what Hill had to say about the story on his Cowboys Corner Blog.

Is Crayton asking to be released with comments like these or did he just say the wrong thing? I'm anxious to see what you guys think.

Does anyone else see the Cowboys steadily heading back into the mediocrity of the early 2000's? They ditched their only playmaker in T.O. The only reason that Witten got so many receptions and touchdowns is that Witten was always being double covered. They have nothing now.
