Should I respond to a BBB complaint?

Seeing as there is no way to actually understand what happened, i will relate my recent interaction with the BBB.

2 months ago i filed a complaint against some outfit in NYC that i believe was running a scam where they sent threatening letters to people claiming they owed thousands of dollars (in my case $7000 or so) for some obscure and old debt, but they could settle it NOW without JAIL TIME and numerous other terrible terrible consequences for half that.

So i reported them to the NY BBB.

This is a copy/paste of the response i got.

Thank you for contacting the Better Business Bureau. While it appears that you do not seek our dispute resolution services, we appreciate the time that you have taken to convey your experience. We will retain your correspondence in our files.

For future reference, had you sought our dispute resolution services, the BBB would have made an initial determination as to your dispute's eligibility for case handling. Certain disputes fall outside of the Bureau's scope of activity. In general, we do not handle claims of the following nature: (1) complaints against government agencies; (2) landlord-tenant disputes; (3) employer-employee or labor disputes; (4) claims involving the competency of professionals (e.g., attorneys, physicians, dentists, accountants); (5) complaints against individuals, rather than businesses; (6) disputes involving consequential damages; (7) claims alleging discrimination; or (8) disputes which have been previously addressed by a court or are in the process of being litigated.

In addition, the Bureau does not provide legal advice or legal services, make collection of wages or debts, or provide credit information. The BBB does not pass judgment on the price charged for merchandise, the quality of services or workmanship, or the length of time merchandise should wear or last, unless misrepresentation is involved. This list is NOT INTENDED AS A COMPLETE LIST OF ALL INELIGIBLE MATTERS, but rather is intended to offer you basic guidance as to the general scope of our activity for your future reference. While we are able to successfully resolve the majority of disputes brought to our attention, we are not an enforcement agency (and thus cannot force a business to comply with your wishes) and are not the appropriate forum for certain matters in dispute.

The BBB does provide pre-purchase information, conducts mediation and arbitration of complaints, and investigates – and seeks to eliminate – misleading and deceptive advertising and selling practices.

So basically, the BBB sent me a form letter about cases they dont handle, which my case did not fall into, and did absolutely nothing.

in 2003 I complained to the BBB about a moving company. A moving company that advertised no BBB complaints in their 12 year history. I understood why.

after filing a complaint, a year later, the place STILL listed as not having any complaints. So I called the BBB. Their answer - Well -They never responded. So it was not registered. Apparently they said it's not a complaint until BOTH sides file their information. But if I wanted to, I could file ANOTHER complaint that included them not responding.

So I did. 6 months later -I called the BBB again and the said the complaint was resolved. I asked how! They told me the company responded and said they spoke to me and worked out a resolution.

Never happened. I opened up a NEW complaint and it stayed open a year, again with no response.

To this day -the company STILL advertises that they have 0 BBB complaints.

BBB sounds pretty useless if you ask me.

I have had the BBB resolve complaints before but I guess it depends how reputable the company is whether they care or not. They got some charges refunded for me once I complained. If it were my company, I would at least respond to the complaint and state the resolution whether it was no action taken or otherwise. Just my opinion...

It is a private company set up so businesses can say they are good businesses. They then extort other businesses to join them and pay a fee to reach some sort of elite status.

That said, there are sheople who actually believe that they are some Govt sponsored watchdog group. As such, I need to make sure I respond or not respond if I have to.

I always respond exactly for that reason. many people actually think the BBB is some sort of authority.

In fact they are nothing but a private business that you pay 300 dollars to per year to say "I am a good ethical business"

I have had one BBB complaint in 7 years, responded to it, and it was all good. Of course, this customer gave me 20k of business and knew lots of rich people, so keeping her happy was paramount for me

The general point though is the BBB is useless. Being BBB certified really means nothing except you paid 300 dollars

Man, did you see Dateline the other night? It was about a very similar thing, only the company was out of the Buffalo area, and they were calling people claiming to be with law enforcement...
