HogNose
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/bizarre/6338002.html ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland lawmakers are thinking maybe it's time to find a way to scrub "Northern scum" — and a few other sensitive pre-Civil War phrases — from the official state song. "Maryland, My Maryland," set to the traditional seasonal tune of "O, Tannenbaum," was written in 1861 and adopted as the state song in 1939. But now some lawmakers are pushing for a change to the warlike language in what was originally a poem that doubled as a call to arms. Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller wants a new commission to examine the song and consider changing some stanzas to reflect the state's diversity and remove offensive phrases. "I love history, but there comes a time when you have to adjust," Miller, a Democrat, told senators Tuesday. A Maryland House of Delegates committee voted down a bill to change the song because members were reluctant to tinker with history. That bill — and another still making its way through the Senate — would have replaced the words written by James Ryder Randall in 1861 with ones penned by John T. White in 1894 describing the state's natural beauty. Randall's poem calls for Maryland to secede from the Union — at a time before the Civil War when Maryland residents sympathized with the Confederacy. The song begins with a hostile reference to President Abraham Lincoln, who brought troops through Baltimore en route to protect Washington: "The despot's heel is on thy shore, Maryland! His torch is at thy temple door, Maryland!" It ends with a call for the state to stand up to the Union: "She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb — Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum! She breaths! She burns! She'll come! Maryland! My Maryland!"

SkinsBry
I wonder why the lyrics weren't changed prior to becoming the state song in 1939, seventy-some years after the south lost the war. While they're at it, Maryland should pass a law that requires Slow Children signs on every road in the state.
twa
Interesting, I always thought Maryland was part of the Northern scum! Is this a case of self loathing?:saber:

Burgold
It ends with a call for the state to stand up to the Union: "She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb — Huzza! She spurns the Northern scum! She breaths! She burns! She'll come! Maryland! My Maryland!" Isn't it funny how when I was taught the state song in Elementary school they skipped these verses? Bloody incomplete education We must never bow to the tyranny of Finland. Burn all ye Northern Scum.

Tastes Like Chicken
I don't get why they patterned a state song after the tune of "O Christmas Tree". I always found it weird, walking on the campus of Maryland and hearing the bell chiming a Christmas tune all damn year.

WARLORD1863
Mason Dixon line is a poor measurement of America's center divide today. The purpose of it was only to resolve a border dispute between Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. It was never meant to divide north from south. And even if Maryland is TECHNICALLY southern by location to the mason dixon line, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a southern state. You can call yourselves southern all you want but when compared to the carolinas, georgia, and the states that hug the gulf of mexico there's very little that attaches Maryland to those areas of the country. Maryland has far more in common with southern PA and Delaware. Face it, Maryland. You're one of us Oh, and having slave quarters nearby is irrelevant when you consider that all states allowed for slavery at some point. New Jersey allowed for slavery until the 13th amendment was passed, but the state took almost a year to pass it. They were very reluctant to give up on their slaves and fought the measure every step of the way. Although technically New Jersey citizens were prohibited from having "slaves" in a measure passed in the 1840's, so they simply called their slaves "apprentices". Nothing in the way of their condition as slaves changed until New Jersey reluctantly passed the 13th amendment.
