Cowboys coach Wade Phillips is entering the final year of his contract. And the lack of support from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in the form of an extension is bad news, says Dallas Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor. He reports that Cowboys players have lost respect for Phillips after he failed to address the team after its season-ending 44-6 loss in Philadelphia and after firing former defensive coordinator Brian Stewart. Without backing from the owner, Taylor says it will be very difficult for Phillips to regain control of the locker room -- especially if the Cowboys slog through a tough stretch early next season: "There's no tangible evidence to suggest Phillips can stop this organization's downward spiral. "Look at his track record. "In Denver, he followed a 9-7 season with a 7-9 year before getting fired. In he went 21-11 in his first two seasons in Buffalo before dipping to 8-8 and getting fired. "It's not my job to be the eternal optimist and paint a rosy outlook. I deal in reality. "It's hard to see Phillips convincing the players that he's going to be considerably more demanding in Year 3 than he was in Years 1 and 2." Phillips said earlier this week that the timetable for a coach putting together a Super Bowl-caliber team is about four years. "It takes about four years to get a championship-type team put together," Phillips told reporters, in his first comments since the season ended. "We were expected, because of Dallas, to do it in one, maybe two years, and we haven't done that. I'm disappointed we haven't, but I think we will." BillyKilmer
Good I love the idea of cowboys falling on their over rated faces again.
addicted
Cowboys I believe will be successful this year regardless of thier head coach. It reminds me of the Barry Switzer year. They lost the one guy who was a complete distraction and headache and that will help them immensily. I'd love to see the Cowboys suck big time this year but I don't think its going to happen. As far as Wade Phillips the mans a bum and always been a bum. I just think Romo sits to pee's going to do well this year dispite what Wade or Garret gives him
SIXX99
It's got little to do with Phillips, the problem is their mediocre owner.

tr1
Puke talent is < what it was last year. Also, I believe there were countless threads about what Fatty does to teams as time goes on (i.e., they continue to decline until he is fired.) This is NFL history repeating itself. HeHateMe
Not sure he has that much credibility as an HC anyway. Sure he's a players coach. And sure he's an excellent DC, but I just don't think he garners the respect of the entire team to begin with.
jthor99
I don't have to be in a locker room to see that Wade Phillips doesn't grasp the attention of his football players. Just like I don't have to be in a locker room to tell you that Norv Tuner isn't a very good head coach. Both of them alike are both very good Cordinators. But, sometimes in professions you are better at not wearing as many hats as indicated. I believe Wade Phillips falls in that category. There is nothing wrong with that either, but it takes a very strong minded man to admit that. Unfortuantley, Wade is going to find out the hardway and quite possibly will be his last head coaching gig of his career in Big D
SkinsBry
In my eyes, he lost any coaching credibility when he started Rob Johnson over Doug Flutie against the Titans.
