Position Battle: Left DE

For now, we can't honestly call this a battle. There is only one person on the roster with every-down NFL experience at this position and that is the recently signed Renaldo Wynn. But you'd have to think that even if Phillip Daniels -- the long-time starter at this spot -- does not re-sign, the club would do something in the draft or lower rungs of free agency to bolster the current mix.

The re-signing of Wynn, 33, makes sense on a lot of levels. He's great at helping younger kids and commands respect around the league. (That will be important with Daniels unsigned and Shawn Springs and Marcus Washington gone.) He can be vocal and forceful if that's called for and there is no doubt in my mind that the Skins are hoping he can influence defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and help with his transition here. Also, with many Redskins veterans questioning rookie NFL line coach John Palermo a year ago, Wynn can be a link between players and the staff.

On the field, though, one must be realistic about Wynn at this point in his career. This could be his last season here and, after being deemed not good enough to be among the top 53 in 2007, he has no one standing between him and a starting job at the moment. Wynn is strong and smart and can play the run but can't produce great results if he's in for 70 snaps.

He has been durable and was a perfect fit for the Giants, who had the best defensive line in the NFL last year, as a rotation player. I spoke with Renaldo recently and he's very excited about the prospect of sharing much of what he learned in New York. Wynn praised Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle and believes he made major strides in pass-rushing technique under him. But, again, this is not someone who was going to be a prospective starter.

As for Daniels, even if he re-signs, his injury problems are legion and you cannot realistically count on him to get through a full season. Still, should he re-sign, he would come in with every chance to start ahead of Wynn, whom he's beaten out before.

On the whole, though, the Wynn/Daniels tandem poses age, speed and potential injury issues. Defensive coordinator Greg Blache wants a burly run stopper at this spot and has never made pass rushing a real emphasis on that side, so it makes some sense from that perspective.

Behind these two, I'd want reinforcements. The only other returning ends are youngsters Chris Wilson and Rob Jackson. They are essentially the same guy, only Wilson is better on special teams. They are speed rushers who lack the size to play on every down and are essentially rush ends who could give you a sporadic burst on third down in sub packages. You can't project more than that based on what we've seen. If Daniels (again, assuming he takes the Skins' low offer) or Wynn were to break down, there is definitely no one ready to play on run downs.

And when you look over the shoulder of the left defensive end and see the void at strong side linebacker, the problems with the perimeter play of this defense become more apparent. To me, that makes it all the more imperative that the club, with one of its five draft picks (only three in the top 200 selections), finds someone with some heft who can come in as a rotation guy at left end and at least have the body-type to provide legit snaps there, should the starter go down.

As it stands, I wouldn't expect teams to fear running away from Albert Haynesworth and plunging into this side of the line, and given the potential issues at linebacker and safety behind these ends, fortifying this side of the field should be considered mandatory.

-------------------------------------------

Ugh. While certainly the concern about the aged ones starting is on the button, he analysis of the players behind them is lacking. So, he thinks that Wilson and Jackson are "basically the same guy" when Jackson outweighs Wilson by about 15 lbs (and weighs more than Carter). Also, no mention of Buzbee at all?

What is the deal with our assistant coaches?

Dan spends money freely....but we seem to have some really weak assistant coaches year after year.

Not our line coach specifically, I understand the Palermo association. But Byner was awful as a RB coach....and how Stan Hixon still has a job with as bad as our receiving game has been is simply astonishing.

And our special teams coach? Wtf?

Maybe Dan uses financial restraint with assistants that aren't coordinators? Is that why we have problems in these areas?

Anyone have any idea?

anyone else find it depressing that daniels & wynn are the best we can product at LE

at this stage, they're great players for depth, but the fact that one will probably be starting and the other seeing significant playing time concerns me.

Yes it is concerning. It isn't the characteristic of a great team. Here is what everyone keeps forgetting:

Snyder is not a football person. Synder buying, and trying to run the Redskins is as absurd as you and I buying a chinese restaurant tomorrow.

I love egg rolls. But I sure as hell have no idea how to run a restaurant, nor do I know how to make chinese food.

If we bought a chinese restaurant, the first step would be to hire someone that knows how to run a restaurant. The second step would be to actually bring in some chefs that specialize in chinese food.

Snyder unfortanately, just jumps right into the kitchen and starts cooking.

Of course that restaurant isn't going to be on par with the competition.

When he was hired, most intelligent people believed it would be a total disaster for the first five years. You knew we had no chance of doing well.

The hope was that after five years, he would realize that he wasn't qualified to run a team in any way, shape or form.

And here we are, ten years later. Snyder is still naming assistant coaches before hiring the head coach. Still making trade offers for guys like Briggs and Ocho Cinco, and it appears he hasn't learned a thing.

A GM would have built the lines first. Everything else is secondary.

lol at a battle for which dinosaur is a better option.

id take daniels over wynn on running downs, we'll just have 3 DTs on the field. if we dont draft a DE with the 13th pick, my only hope is that daniels can rotate with chris wilson and wilson can be a legit pass rushing situational guy.

this is only a stop gap thing, we need a friggin LDE and we need one badly. but vinny runs this team, you know we wont draft one.

"Hail." If we can't trade back let's grab Tyson Jackson. I think he'd be a very solid pick up. I'd take him over Oher but not Smith at RT. After reviewing some draft tapes on NFL.com I really didnt like Rey Rey, or Cushing as much as I did Clay Matthews. He seemed to be more fluid in his drills than Cushing was and Rey Rey's interview was not to my liking. He seemed immature and all about the money. Ofcourse he didn't work drills after pulling hammy. I also like E.Britton more than Oher, seemed smoother in drills, better wonderlic score. I would be happier with Tyson Jackson at 13 than anyone we have and over Cushing and Rey Rey. Yes OLB is a more pressing need given the roster as is RT. The great news is I will be totally SHOCKED if a team, NE, DET, MIN, TB, CHI, NYJ do not want to make a trade with us. We will be dropping a few spots and picking up a 2nd rounder no doubt about it. "Hail!"

I like Mauluga if we must take Lb. He has star potential and may be a great pass rusher. Plays with a mean streak and follows the mold of Lofa and Troy. That's if we at 13. Others we could get are Robert Ayers and maybe dude from Florida State.

I hope we could trade back and somehow get a late 1st round Tackle, and Sintim/or a hybrid dE.

Tyson Jackson at 13 is a big stretch. I guess I'd be "ok" with him if we traded down and got him, but I don't see him as anything special. He is a big end who will hold the point of attack but not really do much to pressure the QB. I really see him as more of a 3-4 DE. If we dropped down I'd much rather pick up a guy like Britton at Tackle or Clint Sintim who can play OLB and DE and can rush the passer like a madman from a 2 or 3 point stance. Both, I believe, are projected as late 1st rounders.

wynn and daniels are both garbage. whats remarkable is wynn made jansen (I believe) look like paper mache last year. says more about jansen then wynn though. my hope? it goes uncapped, danny pulls out some crazy cash and we bring peppers in next year. just imagine that. Peppers and hansworth on the same line? I really hope it goes uncapped. snyder is straight up reckcless with cash, we would have a super bowl in two years.

Totally depressing. Vinny's reaction to Doc's question yesterday about possibly taking Brian Orakpo ticked me off even more. I would like to seriously know what Vinny has against taking DL in the first round.
