A Fan's Guide to Hating Duke - Nova Edition

As if anyone needed more reasons...but here ya go!

10. No Duke fan went to Duke: Rooting for Duke is like rooting for the New York Yankees or the Dallas Cowboys. If you didn't go to Duke or you aren't from North Carolina than you have no business rooting for Duke -- get a life and stop being a front runner.

9. The Scheyer Face: Duke's emotion guy, Jon Scheyer, makes these obnoxious faces throughout the game that look as though he is suffering severe pain. Let's hope he is in pain after Nova's done with dismantling Duke.

(The Scheyer Face is fully explained here.)

8. The Cameron Crazies: These kids sleep out to get tickets only to sit inside a stadium studying during TV timeouts -- so annoying and geeky.

These fans also have a reputation for taking a page from former Dukie Jay Williams and crying after losses. They make beer for a reason -- stop studying for a second and appreciate your college years.

7. Dukie V: ESPN's Dick Vitale is anything but an objective journalist when it comes to Duke. It's pathetic to watch a grown man crowd surf than try to "objectively" call a basketball game.

6. Mike Krzyzewski: The fact that I know how to pronounce his last name is enough reason to hate him. The fact that he is diabolical helps that hatred.

5. The Blue Devil: What's a blue devil? Is Satan depressed or frozen?

4. Duke wins: It's easier to hate a winner -- plain and simple. No one hates on St. John's anymore because they stink.

3. Elton Brand: The man who the 76ers wasted money paying only so that he could go down to an injury went to Duke. It's no coincidence that the Sixers play better without his Duke influence.

2. Coach K's hair: Is that a comb-over, rug or real?

1. Because they stand in the way of Nova's championship run.

Sounds to me like some folks in Philly are hatin on yet another team for being more good then them

You obviously didn't go to Duke. ;)

Anyway, I'm a Duke fan and not from NC so hate me all you want. I have my reasons for liking them and none of them have to do with being a front runner.

Continue to hate though - that's fine.

All Duke fans have their little story that they feel connects them to Duke. My older brother is a bandwagon Duke fan. I  every time he pulls his out.

What is yours?

My Uncle went there so I've been watching Duke games since before I was old enough to appreciate the game of basketball.

Going to basketball camp there and being coached by Coach K and a lot of former players for several summers.

Those would be the main two. I certainly would pull for JMU if they ever played Duke but other than that I really don't see how it's that much different than a kid that grows up watching Maryland and being a fan - even after he goes to college at a different school.

You have to love the people who tell you what fans you have the "right" to be a fan of though.

I know your brother young man. He is a great person and you should respect his Duke love. I too am a Duke fan and have been since your brother and I were dominating little league together. My brother was a duke fan because Billy King went to our high school Park View around the same time my brother did. My brother started rooting for Duke when King went there. Since I'm a tool I rooted for them because he did. That was over 20 years ago. I'm still a tool and I still root for Duke. I go back to Danny Ferry dawg!

Say hi to your wonderful family for me and tell them "Go Duke"!

Dyed in the blue VILLANOVA WILDCATS fan here. I've been a fan ever since I was a little kid. (When i was small I lived near the campus, and I went to a couple of games when I was about 9. Loved them ever since.)

I think they've definitely got the body and size to muscle Duke around, my only worry is that 'Nova has a tendency to let themselves get out of their game. If things aren't going well they get shot happy and don't play to their strength. Like against AU, Carr was draining 3s like nobody's business, and Nova should have slowed down each possession and physically beaten AU, use the clock and score. But they kept running it down and gunning it up and AU would rebound and kick it out to Carr and 3 .. and repeat the cycle. Only when they settled in and made AU play physical did they dominate like they should have all game.

With a team like Duke they can't afford to let that happen.

I root for my old teammates on Marist, UT-Chattanooga, and where ever my friend Terrell is going...hopefully UMD :D

I dont really root for teams that had people I played against...if I liked them, I usually just hope they do well (Durant, Beasley, Lawson, Donte Green)...I'm kinda forced rooting for Vasquez even though I hate his guts.
