Hubbs
There was a little side discussion in some media-related thread about a week ago that involved the Daily Show and whether or not it's the machine of liberal ideology that some folks claim. Personally, I believe that Jon Stewart has very little partisan loyalty, and the reason he's gone after Republicans so hard for the past eight years was because - hello - they were the ones in charge. Now with the Dems running things, the show is quickly adjusting its guns. I wanted to post a few clips because I honestly think that Stewart does a better job performing the role of the "Fourth Estate" in exposing the lies and hypocrisy of public officials than most of the traditional news media, and if fewer people would tune him out because of an assumed bias, it'd be a good thing. Clip 1 Clip 2 Clip 3 (Wait until the end on that one)
Burgold
I think you're absolutely right about the comedic aim of the Daily Show. It's much less funny to skewer the impotent. The Repubs were in complete charge and they got the credit or the brunt. Now, the Dems need to beware the satirists wrath because they are under the microscope and the country is on their shoulders. Bang
But I thought the Daily show was a leftist front designed to ridicule the Republicans and push the Democrat agenda? ~Bang
Burgold
Well, we were assured (by many on ES) that the show would go off the air within weeks of Obama's inauguration because Stewart and his writers/producers would rather quit than make fun of a Democratic President. Rocky21
The only folks that would be surprised by this are the same people you hear parroting "Liberal media bias" over and over again. Satire is just that. Satire.
@DCGoldPants
That is why those who think there is some liberal media conspiracy, are crazy. It was invented by Foxnews to get Conservatives to think they are honest brokers in this biz. The Main Stream Media always questions who is in charge. Regardless of party. As the 24 hour news cycle gets more and more detailed. The more it seems they are after the current guy. Bush got it worse than Clinton because of the Internet, Blogging, Streaming Video, Etc. Obama in the long run will be under a stronger microscope because it'll be during whatever is next with technology.

Touchdown Redskins
I'd have to agree 100%. Heck, even when the Repubs were in charge, Stewart consistently would poke fun at the Dems for being softies and cowards.

Republicans held the Oval Office from 2000-2008... Republicans held the Senate from 2002-2008... Republicans held the House from 1994-2006... Republicans were in "complete charge" for 4 of the last 8 years... I don't even think you would've classified the Democrats as "impotent" for 2 of those years, since the Senate was 49-49-2. jrockster21
You mean...comedy shows will make fun of anything that's funny? SAY IT AIN'T SO!!! Even NPR's "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me" is making fun of the current administration. On one of their shows awhile ago, they made a comment something along the lines of "We were worried about running out of material after the bonanza the last administration provided us...apparently we did not have to worry." ECU-ALUM
"The Daily Show is an editorial cartoon come to life." -- Ted Koppell It doesn't matter who is in control if they are screwing up someone needs to hold them accountable...that is one of the big reasons I love watching "The Daily Show"...that and the fact that Jon Stewart is a huge Springsteen fan like me. Remember the Repubs threatening the "nuclear option," turning off mics and shutting down the lights when the Dems would begin to speak, remember the reality of the situation. Bush never had to veto a single bill for six years. Six years! The Dems were spineless, hapless whipped dogs, and even in Bush's last two years people argued that the Dems had no ideas and were completely compliant to Bush and Cheney, too afraid to vote for anything for fear of veto. The Republicans had all but free reign for a very long stretch and they did some good, some bad, and a lot of miserable. The Dems are guilty for being spineless wimps who didn't counter and didn't propose better ideas for fear that the Republicans would get credit. They are guilty of not doing their job as the Republicans are guilty of failing to do their job well (in many instances). Is it really any wonder why the horse went into a bar? You can lead a horse to water, but only the U.S. government can lead a horse to drink.

I'll quote myself on this one: Social liberalism provides the star-spangled donkeys with somewhat of a cause, but their general lack of direction was highlighted after taking control of Congress in the 2006 elections, when, like a victorious brigade of Alzheimer's patients, the Pelosi-led legislators promptly forgot everything they had been elected to do. Diehard Democrats became a big chunk of the audience over the past eight years, while diehard Republicans weren't nearly as interested. The audience reaction will slowly change over time as the diehard Democrats grow frustrated with the Obama jokes and diehard Republicans start to migrate back. Smoot Point Really
Smoot made a funny... or is reality challenged. I think he made a funny. You used the words "complete charge"... and then "impotent" to describe Republicans now... I wouldn't call Republicans impotent now, but I would say the Democrats are in complete charge now. I demonstrated that Republicans were really only in "complete charge" for at most 4 years. The Democrats were never impotent at any time during the last 8 years. The word "exaggerate" was used accurately as I see it... Since you were exaggerating. There is nothing wrong with exaggerating occasionally, as long as you also see that it is an exaggeration. The audience reaction will slowly change over time as the diehard Democrats grow frustrated with the Obama jokes and diehard Republicans start to migrate back. I don't how true that is. For example, the Capitol Steps had this running song gag... the first time I heard it was under Clinton. They used the tune of the Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel. In it they have a reporter asking "Clinton" about his affair with Monica and asks him to come clean. Clinton listens thoughtfully and then responds in the chorus. Li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li Funniest thing ever. Go ahead a few years and Bush is President and they reinvent the song with Bush at the press conference and they are asking about his evidence of WMD's (I think) and "Bush" is listening until the chorus when they ask him to tell the truth. Bush responds... Li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li Made me lose it both times... and equally. (the li li thing is actually the du-wop used in the original song which makes it funnier)
