Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk.

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are finally slapping together their high-profile cast for "The Three Stooges," a comedy project the filmmakers have been developing for years. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, and Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly. Benicio del Toro is a rumored possibility for the brothers' taciturn leader, Moe.

The studio is looking to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot.

I keep thinking they picked Penn because of his nose lol...he just seems too old in the face to be playing Larry, but who knows.

He's def too old these days...in his younger days maybe, but now? It's gunna be kinda weird. Maybe they can make him look a lot younger? He definitely has the nose though :D

I have to imagine they picked Penn after seeing how well he could fill the role. Penn can be absolutely brilliant in certain movies, and it wouldn't shock me to see him do the same in this film. Benicio is one of my favorite actors, and I think he steals the show in this one. Carey obviously will pull the physical hilarity.

That being said, I think this movie could turn out to be a gem. I'm not a huge fan of remakes, but the Farrely brothers never cease to impress.

I'm with others in thinking that this is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

The Stooges are comedy gold, and they hold up today as well as they ever did.

Want a funny 3 Stooges movie? String 6 of their old classics together.

I don't think of Penn as either funny or a slapstick physical comedian.

The last comedy I remember Penn being in was Fast Times at Ridgemont High (probably the only one) , though he does seem to have good range. Who knows...but I can think of others actors for that role.

Sean Penn may be a jerk but he is a fantastic actor. I never would have believed that the same guy could be as convincing as 1) Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times, 2) that nerdy loser spy in The Falcon and the Snowman, 3) the scary army sergeant in Casualties of War, 4) the death row criminal in Dead Man Walking, 5) a flamboyant gay politician in Milk.

In every one of those roles, Sean Penn disappears and the character takes over. If anyone can pull this off, it would be Penn.

Casualties of War is one messed up movie. What's scarier is that you know that stuff happened in real life too.

Jeez, people are writing it off already. Give it a chance. It's not like there are a bunch of no names doing this remake like there was for "Dumb and Dumberer" That was a horrible remake. This remake will have fantastic actors. Sean Penn obviously thought he could play this role very well if he was the first one to sign up for it. He could play a doorknob and still be in consideration for an Oscar. Jim Carrey is the king of physical comedy so I am sure he will not disappoint. Del Toro, also an outstanding actor, should steal the show. Finally, the Farrelly Brothers are doing the movie, can't go wrong with them. So, just give it a chance, it certainly has the star power and minds behind it to do well. I for one am very interested in seeing how it turns out and if it flops, who cares? Not going to ruin my life, it will just waste 5 or 6 dollars. Not the end of the world.

Jim Carrey: did a fantastic job as Andy Kaufman in "Man In The Moon"...could do well as Curly, here.

Sean Penn: As a few others mentioned, he is an outstanding actor and does disappear inside his roles. Watch the movie "The Assassination Of Richard Nixon" if you haven't already...he's brilliant in that movie. Still, maybe it's because I don't really have a "personality" connected to Larry that I'm having a hard time imagining Penn in the role...

Del Toro: another fantastic actor. He was my favorite in "The Usual Suspects", and if he can pull off that mush-mouthed criminal so damn perfectly he can probably pull off Moe.

Weird, but I'd feel better about this movie if it were being directed by someone with a bunch of serious dramas under his/her belt.
