McDaniels: Cutler's "our quarterback"

Redskins 360

Ryan O'Halloran

The Josh McDaniels-Jay Cutler Saga has stretched from Denver to southern California, site of this week's NFL owners meetings.

In an interview with NFL Network that will air tonight, McDaniels said of Cutler: "He's our quarterback, period. ... We need to keep the line(s) of communication open."

He added: "We’re working through that. Jay and I will have an opportunity to talk more as we go here. I know it’s been a very public issue and this is something that I think happens more than people realize. We have a relationship, nobody knows where it stands right now, but it’s going to get better. It will continue to get better, I believe that. I think it’s something that both parties have to work toward a solid resolution. We have a good nucleus of players there that are looking forward to seeing him back at the facility and working with him. It will get to that point at some point in the near future."

Asked if a lack of communication created this mess, McDaniels said: "It’s just a situation that came up. I think there are some things out there that are not necessarily true, and there are some other things that are definitely true. We have to work through those things are make sure that the lines of communication stay open. I think that’s the biggest thing, in terms of getting over any kind of an issue that a player may have with an organization or a coach. It’s the same thing that (the organization) has to do when there is an issue with a player. We want to come directly to (the player) and work through it and communicate to find a common ground that we can start going forward and working toward a good resolution."

McDaniels added: "We can't predict the future. He's our quarterback and we want him to be our quarterback. We made that very clear to him. We hope he feels the same way."

Cutler and McDaniels have yet to have a face-to-face meeting that doesn't include Cutler's agent, Bus Cook.

Although the New York Jets reportedly have expressed interest for Cutler, the consensus around the league is that Cutler and McDaniels will eventually make nice -- the quarterback has vowed to show up for mandatory mini camp and training camp -- and the Broncos will move forward. Even if Denver wanted to deal him, it wouldn't be able to get equal value.

The Jets' Plan A could be USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, who is reportedly in New York (or will be in the next day or so) to meet with the coaching staff.

Just to juxtapose this piece of fluff with another:

DANA POINT, CALIF. — Josh McDaniels may be saying Jay Cutler is his quarterback, but Cutler is not ready to call McDaniels his coach.

According to an NFL source, McDaniels sent a text message to the disgruntled Cutler before arriving here at the owners meetings. Cutler did not respond.

Cutler, who finished the past three seasons as the Broncos' starting quarterback, has formally requested a trade primarily because he's at odds with McDaniels.

McJaygate began when McDaniels attempted to deal Cutler on Feb. 28 in a proposed three-team swap that would have brought former New England quarterback Matt Cassel to the Broncos. McDaniels was New England's offensive coordinator and Cassel's coach last season. Cassel was instead dealt to Kansas City.

Although Cutler has said he understood McDaniels willingness to acquire his former pupil, he has come to distrust his coach. Two conversations between Cutler and McDaniels since the proposed trade have only aggravated the disagreement.

McJaygate has captivated the NFL nation as it pits a 32-year-old inexperienced coach in McDaniels against a young star quarterback in Cutler, who set a team record last season by passing for 4,526 yards.

Cutler skipped McDaniels' first team meeting last Monday and has yet to appear for the team's voluntary offseason conditioning program.

Cutler's trade request is serious enough that he's forfeiting a $100,000 workout bonus. More than 10 teams have contacted the Broncos, either through e-mail, text or phone call, to at least inquire about Cutler's availability.

McDaniels has shunned the Denver Post here at the owners meetings, deciding instead to interview with the NFL Network here Monday morning. In that interview, McDaniels said of Cutler, "he's our quarterback." McDaniels will be available for all media here Tuesday morning at the annual AFC coaches' breakfast.

It's possible the next watershed moment in McJaygate is April 17-19, when the Broncos hold a mandatory minicamp. If Cutler doesn't attend, the Broncos may step up efforts to acquiesce his trade request before the NFL Draft begins the following week.

:hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:

I knew their would be posts immediately trying to prove he's going to be traded

The Bronco's say Cutler is their QB

The Redskins say Campbell is their QB

so that proves Cutler will be the Redskin QB in '09

I've read a few things about this today that make you think about this

"Say you're the Broncos, and Tampa Bay offers you two ones [two first-round picks] plus [second-year quarterback] Josh Johnson for Cutler,'' one NFC coach told me. "Denver makes the deal and picks a quarterback with one of the ones. You've traded the best young quarterback in football for two guys who might have a chance, but might be washouts, too. Denver's problem is they could never get fair value for him.''

You could easily substitute Washington and Jason Campbell in this very sentence.

The other thing was:

"Sorry, but we don’t buy it. And we won’t buy it until the Broncos tell Cutler and agent Bus Cook in no uncertain terms that Cutler’s options for 2009 are to play for the Broncos, or to play for no one.

We remain convinced that Friday’s report of “more than ten” teams calling last week about Cutler was leaked by the Broncos, specifically to open the bidding for the disgruntled quarterback."

I agree with both sides on this one. I don't think anyone will offer enough for Cutler to make the Broncos have no choice other then to trade him but at the same time simply saying "Jay Cutler is our QB" is not a ringing endorsement that the player won't be moved at all. I believe the Broncos are simply trying to see what they can get for Cutler and waiting for that offer they can't refuse. I don't think they will get it and he stays

1. no

2. think about it'll come to you

1. "If you're always chasing the day's headlines, you'll eventually become so reactionary that you'll ignore long-term good for short-term satisfaction, and you'll fail."

Ummm..... who's the biggest DAILY headline chaser of any Redskins fan on ExtremeSkins?

And before you even THINK about arguing your impartiality in simply delivering the "news".... you aren't fooling anyone. The motivation of the original post in this thread clearly shows your impartiality  So before you throw any stones....

2. Nah, I don't want to think about it. I want you to spell it out.... so it's documented... and cannot be miscontrued. And then we can all reference your reply for craps-and-giggles later.

Frankly, I don't doubt that there's a legitimate chance that Cutler gets traded.

You see, with a rookie head coach making a stupid first move of throwing the incumbent qb under the bus in floating trade talks for Cassel...and then, the owner of the Broncos, supporting the kid HC, but all the while saying that Cutler isn't going anywhere...well, this whole episode makes that franchise look schizophrenic.

And schizophrenics are hard to figure out...except that expect the unexpected.
