Im gonna be going to school to get my masters at Columbia and was curious if anyone was from the area (Washington Heights) or is familiar with it. I am worried about finding a place to live and would like to hear feedback from anyone who knows anything about NYC.

washington heights is nice too...

but 150's and riverside a little below columbia u's hospital and like 15 minutes from columbia has nice places to live for that are pretty cheap

oh and congrats on columbia man! my sister did a grad program there and loved it...they let her take classes in the b-school, and other professional programs.

Thanks I appreciate it. I hear a lot of mixed things about the heights. Some say it is nice but others say it is sketchy. I am not worried it is more for my girlfriend than me. I also think people say it is sketchy just cuz there are a lot of Dominicans there but I am Cuban and that part makes me excited because DC has a lack of Spanish Caribbeans.

heh yeah thats the thing about me not having a problem with a "sketchy" place in nyc that has a strong latino community...i'm hispanic as well so it doesnt really bother me

and yeah if you check out spots around the 150's and riverside (closer to broadway) there are MAD dominicans which is cool...and you could definitely walk/bike to columbia from there

there is also a neighborhood...im blanking on the name...right under wash heights that has a lot of dominicans and is sort of up and coming...

also i mean...harlem has nice places to live for decent prices...soo you may want to check that out

edit: inwood...its really close to wash heights but closer to downtown...check that out too

also i dont know what kind of commute you are looking for...but have you thought about any of the other boroughs?

I think you meant to say Inwood is further away from Downtown, you can't get further away from downtown than Inwood in Manhattan. BTW, that's a great school (congrats) and it will be nicer and safer the closer you are to the school but there are hooligans no matter where you go in all of NYC. My advise, walk around the area you are thinking of living at night and see how you feel about it. Inwood is madd cheap compared to anywhere else in the city, so I wouldn't rule it out and it's only about 30 mins from midtown on the 1.

Make sure to join the rest of the NYC Redskins fans at Redsky when the season starts back up. It's like home away from home.

Yeah I am driving up next weekend to check out the area and see if there are any other neighborhoods that would work. Also do you know what it would be like to have a car if I lived in that neighborhood, I know it would suck in the village but I am hoping it might be easier in upper manhattan.

I will most def do the Skins meetup hopefully we have a little more to cheer about this season.

not sure about the car issue. my sister in law and her husband live in brooklyn for 4 years and didn't missing having a car for a second. it's an easy train ride to DC, and if you're going away for a weekend, you can just rent a car... much cheaper than owning a car, paying for parking (possibly), and paying insurance in NYC.

Yeah I would prefer not to have my car but the thing is I heard it is a pain in the butt going food shopping in NYC especially in upper manhattan and I really do not want to have to lug bags of groceries on the subway and I do not feel like going shopping every three days or ordering out all the time. That is probably on of the main reasons I want my car.

A lot of people do the freshdirect.com thing if they can't get to a supermarket. You might want to look into that. I live down in Gramercy Park and have been car-less for years (would just be too hard without paying a fortune), but you might have a little easier time parking uptown. IMO nothing beats just having a bike and no car to worry about.

my sister in law used freshdirect.com all the time. there are little grocery stores all over the place too for random little things... easy to swing through one of those on your way home from the subway, school, work, whatever.

i had a car in downtown philly and it was a huge pain in the ass. the public transportation there isn't as good as NYC's so it was more of a necessity. if i were living in NYC, i wouldn't own a car for sure.

From what I've been told this is an excellent time to be moving to NYC. Buildings are giving away free rent for a couple months, reducing or getting rid of fees, etc to entice people to move in.

Kinda makes me wish I had applied to NYU.

NYU is played out now, you are better off at Columbia.

But yes people have been getting really good deals lately. Also check gothamist.com for good ol NYC related stuff. I love that site.

As someone who kept his car on the upper east side of Manhattan for a year, DON'T DO IT! Don't fool yourself dude, you will get tickets, you will have to move your car almost daily even if you only want to use it once a week. Street cleaning comes through four days a week and meter maids will find ANY reason to give you a ticket. ANY REASON. The only big grocery stores with parking lots that are free are going to be out of the city anyways and your living space likely won't handle a gazillion bags of groceries.

Good luck, you'll soon find that living in NY means doing things the NY way.

I didnt even think about the street cleaning I just though they only did that on major roads and not side streets like here in DC. I would really like to keep my car but it may just be too damn expensive especially since I will be in grad school and broke as a joke anyways.

Couldn't you just let a friend or family member "borrow" your car for a couple years then get it back if you leave NYC?

Oh yeah I have no problem with that I will just leave it at my dads place. I am just so used to having it that it will be weird not too.

Don't worry, once you move to Manhattan you will become just like every other Manhattan-ite who never has any desire to leave the island, much less need a car :silly:

I had a friend that lived in Inwood, and I never had trouble parking there. Alternate side of the street parking, so you have to get used to street cleaning. Try it without a car first.
