Environmental Group Says It Burned Houses

Tue May 27, 9:18 AM ET

SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. - The radical environmental group Earth Liberation Front is claiming responsibility for fires that destroyed two houses near Ann Arbor in March.

The slogan "ELF, no sprawl" was spray painted on the garage door of a house next to one of those burned March 21 in the Mystic Forest subdivision. On its Web site, the group claims responsibility for the fires, which it says caused $400,000 in damage.

The group also takes responsibility for burning luxury homes being built near Philadelphia late last year. A picture of a burning home is featured on the Web site, along with instructions on how to start fires.

The group says no one has claimed responsibility for last summer's fires that destroyed two luxury homes under construction, but police said they suspect the ELF.

The FBI (news - web sites ) has said it considers the Earth Liberation Front one of the nation's most prolific domestic terrorist organizations. The group has claimed responsibility for a series of antigrowth attacks in the past six years.

A message seeking comment was sent Tuesday to an e-mail address listed on the group's Web site but its Web site says it "uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the destruction of the natural environment."

Superior Township Fire Marshal Wayne Dickinson, whose department usually fights about three accidental house fires a year, said the arsons have people on edge.

"All of the builders are on pins and needles," he said. "They are getting security dogs and hiring people to sit in their houses because of what's going on."

We have wished, we ecofreaks, for a disaster or for a social change to come and bomb us into Stone Age, where we might live like Indians in our valley, with our localism, our appropriate technology, our gardens, our homemade religion -- guilt-free at last! -- Stewart Brand

Pretty wild stuff. I’ve never heard of these friggin idiots, and surprised being land development is a huge issue in SW Florida. While I don’t like over development of any areas, it’s a real crock of shlitz down here. We have a place called Bab**** Wilderness, which got a huge chunk of land in my area that was where most people have gone to ride dirt bikes, ATV’s, and other off road vehicles for the past twenty five years. The fed deemed the land "Enviro sensitive" and they got it for dam near nothing. Now, for some reason this same land is no longer too sensitive, and they are looking into putting about 4000 houses on it. Were not talking a normal subdivision here, but a town. How do they get away with stuff like this. If you look at the land, it’s no different then it was 10 years ago, yet it’s not so sensitive when money can be made.

As for these folks burning houses down to prove their point, I hope a few get burned. There putting my brothers lives on the line for no good reason.

Like PETA, here's a group with a reasonable message, but it's loonier members turn it into a caricature.

Every year it's harder and harder to find The Great Outdoors. I hate that the next generation or so lose the ability to go out into Nature.

But I'm not going to bomb a strip mall, not matter how little purpose I feel they serve. :silly:

TC, I think you and I are in agreement except for one subtle but significant (IMHO) point. There certainly are good arguments to be made for ethical treatment of animals and for responsible use and preservation of the environment.

I can't get behind any organization, however, that allows radical nut jobs run them and dominate their philosophy the way that PETA and ELF have. That's the equivalent to me of someone arguing how the Nazi's were good for the German economy. So f^*&%@# what?!?!
