Scott picks Jets over Ravens

Linebacker Bart Scott and the New York Jets agreed to a six-year deal worth $48 million on Friday, according to Scott's agent Harold Lewis.

Earlier in the day the Jets offered a five-year, $40 million deal. When New York upped the offer by a year, Scott chose the Jets over Baltimore.

Scott arrived at the Jets facility early Friday morning to meet with his former Ravens defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan, who is now the head coach of the team.

Scott has played seven seasons with Baltimore amassing 433 tackles and 16 sacks in his career. His best season was in 2006 when he made the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team. In that season, he had 103 tackles and 9½ sacks.

Scott to Jets isn't done deal yet

Ravens inside linebacker Bart Scott is in New York, but continues to still negotiate with both the Ravens and Jets.

There is speculation that the Ravens have offered Scott a five-year contract worth $42 million, and Scott also wants assurances that he will become the center piece of the defense in Baltimore, much like Ray Lewis was during the last decade.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan, the Ravens' former defensive coordinator, keeps increasing the ante as the Ravens go up.

No surprise there, he'll play great for Rex Ryan. Looks like Ray Lewis probably stays in Bmore as well.

Yeah, i called this one. I said several weeks ago that Bart Scott will be the fall guy. It was no way they would allow T-Sizzle to walk, and Ray is the heart and soul of the team. Bart, though he is really good, is certainly replacable, more so than the other two.

Yeah really. It amazes me how he goes up there and bam he's a Jet without any talks before hand.

well to play the devils advocate...

he did play for ryan for what...7 years? so its not like he would have to have a ton of talks. maybe ryan said something like 'any time any of you are FAs, you are always welcome on my team' before he left. and if scott knew he might not get re-signed by the ravens, he could have decided beforehand to go to the jets to be back with ryan, even without any talks.

Jets signed ILB Bart Scott to a five-year, $40 million contract.

Clearly, Scott was looking to max out. The "Mad Backer" turned down a deal from Baltimore worth $7.5 million annually to get $8 million a year from New York. Scott, 29 in August, will start inside next to David Harris. Rex Ryan is more familiar with Scott and figures to use him in the old Ray Lewis role while Harris takes on more blocks. Scott is a disruptive blitzer when given the freedom to do so. He's also durable and will be an IDP to target.
