SnyderShrugged
BIG mistake (IMO), this issue is a Dem killer everytime they try it. If they are so freaking worried about mexicans getting guns, enact a ban on sales to Mexicans! Not us! idiots! Semiautomatics are an "assault weapon"? Give me a freaking break! So my 10/22 with a 20 round magazine is an assualt rifle now? http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id=6960824&page=2 The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today. Wednesday Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Obama administration will seek to reinstitute the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004 during the Bush administration. "As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters. Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border. "I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S. In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now." During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider. Second Amendment to Blame?"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon. The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds. "A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."
sacase
First, the justification of Mexico is weak, make a law against US citizen's because of Mexico's problems, sorry that is BS. The assult weapon ban was BS. If I recall the CApatin of the New Jersey state police said he had more officers attacked by Tigers than by people with "assault" weapons. This is a stupid ban on how a gun looks. Guess I better go buy one now.

Plus there is that whole "protecting ourselves" thingy. You're crazy over God, too. Pretty much not going to gain any ground with that excuse over here. The 12th Commandment
When my government tells Pakistan they can have nukes but I can't have a mini-14 something's wrong (ok, a little over the top ). Registration and background checks, no prob. But when they're banned they're going to go on the black market (like every other desired commodity) and then only baddies will have them. Prosperity
it's probably too late to do anything about guns in the US, too many, too ubiquitous I'm not really against the ban in principle, but I don't see any practical benefits, all it's gonna do is rile up the gun nuts
stevenaa
I'll just do like I did before the last ban was enacted. Go buy an assault rifle. Seriously. There are people already doing this who would have never considered buying one.

DeanCollins
I hope it works. We're crazy over guns in this country.~Bang ditto, go buy yourself one now if you're worried about it. The law wouldn't be retroactive. Otherwise you're just biatching about the right to go buy a gun that, up until this point, you haven't wanted to purchase before. When the Brady bill was being drawn up, I had the opportunity to buy an H&K G3 full auto with a belt fed kit for $3000, and the class III license was fairly easy to get. I thought about for a few days and wondered wtf do I need an assault rifle for?

There are people already doing this who would have never considered buying one. That's what happened as the administration changed over. Everyone was buying handguns. Now to get a new Glock it'll take a few months because they didn't plan for the demand. Concealed weapons permits are clogged up to hell in Florida now and they are taking months longer to process. Prosperity
why would you spend $3k on an automatic G3? Are you afraid of ze Germans? (yeah I know H&K is German) I don't I guess it's just one of those things people like, that I just can't understand. Err edit, just saw you had the Class 3 liscence, my bad Nobody who supports an assault weapons ban can actually state WHAT AN ASSAULT WEAPON IS
HighOnHendrix
No suprise here. One of the things he said he would do once in office. He also wants to "address" abortion, i.e. make it more available and have minors not have to inform their parents' they are getting one. Which makes perfect sense: let's do/allow bad things to happen to babies and aid criminals at the same time!
