Boldin open to long-term deal

Adam Schefter

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin ran a reverse Thursday.

Boldin’s agent Drew Rosenhaus told Cardinals general manager Rod Graves that, while his client remains receptive to a trade, he is willing to sign a long-term deal with Arizona. Previously, Boldin had said he never would re-sign with the Cardinals, but now, after some time away from the team and the game, he has softened his stance.

However, if a long-term deal cannot be worked out, Boldin still would like to be dealt. But for the time being, Boldin wanted to give the Cardinals additional options. Rosenhaus and Graves met Thursday in Indianapolis. They covered some ground. There still is plenty more to address.

Of course he is. Boldin would honestly be foolish to try and leave Arizona where he's made his mark and could eventually go down in history with Fitzgerald as the best duo football has ever seen.

With him staying and Warner likely to come back, Arizona has a shot to make it back to the playoffs.

Cardinals to Boldin: Wait your turn

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Cardinals have a message for Anquan Boldin: It's not his turn.

Arizona general manager Rod Graves said he understands the Pro Bowl receiver's frustration and desire to have a new contract, but said the team has bigger priorities right now that working out a new deal for a player who's still bound to the club for two more seasons.

"I wish we were in a position to address everyone's contract desires when they want," Graves said at the NFL's scouting combine. "But that doesn't happen in the real world."

Boldin has been at odds with the Cardinals since late in last season when he had an on-field altercation with former offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Boldin has also been adamant about reworking his deal, which he deems undervalued after fellow receiver Larry Fitzgerald signed a four-year, $40 million deal last offseason.

Boldin, a three-time Pro Bowler in six seasons, caught a career-high 11 touchdowns last season in just 12 games.

"We respect Anquan's abilities and we feel he's one of the best players in the NFL," said Graves, who added he must place the free agency period that opens Friday ahead of Boldin's concerns.

"We'd like to do an extension with him with the best window comes."

-- Graves said the Cardinals are making progress toward a new deal with QB Kurt Warner, who can be a free agent on Friday, and hopes to finalize it "sooner rather than later."

Warner said Friday he's "leaning" toward returning, and has said he wants to play for the Cardinals again. Graves said he would like to complete a deal before free agency begins, but isn't worried that he might lose Warner to another team. "We're not overly concerned about that," he said.

-- The Cardinals have made no decision on whether to release RB Edgerrin James, Graves said. James, who lost his starting job in midseason before having a late-season resurgence, has one year remaining on his contract and wants to be released.

Graves said the Cardinals made to guarantees to James that they would cut him after the season. "There was no commitment to a time frame," he said. "We just said we'd look at it after the season."

In that division, they will definitely make the playoffs. Barring a huge smackdown by the injury bug.
