Raub
I know it's KFFL, but they're reporting that the Colts will allow Hunter Smith to test the free agent market. Might be worth a look for the Skins. He was 10th in net punt average last season. That's just a bit better than Shankemeier's 35th out of 36 performance. http://www.kffl.com/player/854/nfl
Grimm
He would be an upgrade over what we have, which is nothing.
nightbird
Worth a look. He's more of a "coffin corner" guy who works the angles as opposed to just a big strong foot. He's also worked a lot inside in a controlled environment, so i don't know how much that affects how good he'd be for us.
Raub
Well we can only go 1 spot lower in net punt average, so there's no place to go but up
CM916
Incidentally, I recently signed him for a year in a bootleg football sim I picked up for around $4. He was a big improvement over Frost but Lechler showed up very cheap the next season so I pulled the trigger. All three are still on my 80 man roster but that won't last. Anyway, I think Smith is a very viable, affordable option for two or three years.

CM916
I was wondering how long it'd take till this thread was started. So, we don't need a punter? I don't equate this one to the other "should we sign everyone that becomes available" threads. We could actually use this guy.
addicted
This is the kind of upgrade the team really needs. Definitly worth a look and a sign in my opinion
Gibbs Hog Heaven
IF the Colts let him go, which I'd be surprised if they actually did, then he'd be a very welcome pick up to give us some much needed stability at the position for a few years. Hell, Cooley punting back there would be a welcome improvement on what we've recently had. Oh, and as an aside, (and here's my :2cents: for free that this will get trashed); if Schefter's right, and Indy release Marvin for cap reason's, he'd be more than worth a look. I know, I know, another team's vet. castoff, we need to get younger and bring on our own etc, all of which I'm fully in agreement with. I'm just thinking that, if he was willing to come on a cheap salary, given he's 36 and at the tail end of a Hall of Fame career, he'd be a great compliment to Moss, El and last years two rookies, (what better role model could they have helping them along), and could take the sadly now ineffectual Thrash' roster spot. All relative to whether Indy do release him, and what teams jump in, but given the lack of picks we hold, and top free agent talent out there at receiver, we'd be remiss to not investigate the possibilty if it came up. Hail.

MWCREDSKINS
Maybe but in a perfect world this kid( name escapes me) is the answer. Gotta find a long term solution here.

pjfootballer
He's about the only decent kicker or punter left on the market. I'd take him.
Raub
The thing I like is he is a proven commodity. He's not a guy with "potential", he's a guy who has gotten it done in the NFL. He might not be a Pro Bowler, but at least you have a good idea of what you're getting. Signing training camp castoffs and college award winners hasn't worked out very well for us recently. kingdaddy
I'm trying to think of the last team that actually went hard after a punter in free agency. Why can't we find a decent punter without having to pay big free agent dollars? Punter should be the last of our concerns but here we are talking about needing a punter of all things thru free agency. This after we wasted a draft pick on one just last year. Does the state of our punter position sum up Vinny's tenure or what?
pjfootballer
With games being so close (parity) the punter and kicker's jobs are even more important then they used to be. Think about the Philly game at home last year. If Plack doesn't down the ball inside the 10, three times, we lose. It helped our defense. Now think of the Dallass game at home. Suisham misses a 30 some yarder in the first half. Instead of being 14-13 and only needing a FG to win, we were forced to get 7 and failed. alwaysaskin
Honestly, I'd love to see Hunter Smith in Burgundy and Gold. I think PJ said it best Kicker and Punter are becoming more important to the game in the age of parity. We had the worst specialists in the NFL. The good news is that our punters and kickers cannot possibly get any worse, the bad news is that this has been the norm since Chip Lohmiller and Matt Turk left.
