HEavyJumbo85
greatest show ever. They have gone downhill a bit since season 12. but 4 through 12 were amazing. Not as good as it once was, but honestly it's hard to compare to those 9 seasons, they were unbelievable. Family guy is garbage in comparision. One of the best back and forths between Bart and the Carnies "The main thing is to bring in the rubes" "Do whatever it takes. sweet talk, insults, slang from the 30s that no one uses anymore." "Like Rubes?" "Now you're on the trolley."
RedlightG20
Family guy is garbage in comparision. That's a bit of a reach, no? Simpson's is alright, I don't watch it much anymore. But in the last few seasons you can tell they've really taken alot from the Family Guy theme of randomness (ie. the "just like that time..." flashbacks). I've sorta found that people are heavily divided between FG and Simpsons. It's either you're all about the Simpsons or you're almost entirely about FG. But in light of the thread... "I call the big one 'Bitey'" and my personal favorite "Why do you talk like that?" "I had a stroooooooke"

fwo40
:stfu:I love the Simpsons. Your assumptions are baseless. The show doesn't have the same effect anymore. Everybody knows that. 1.) I could care less whether you like the show or not. I made zero assumptions on that. However, I did comment on the fact that you used the word "save" for a show that has been on the air for 2 decades. An ironic choice of words. "Save" compared to what? The sucess of a show like "american dad"or compared to their prime years? If it's compared to their prime years that leads directly to... 2.) How could any show have the same effect after that many years? Let alone the reality that the show was basically the 1st prime time cartoon of any impact-also put it in a class by itself. There have been numerous "descendents" of the show in that regard, it's impossible and unfair to measure it against a climate that no longer exists. Hell South Park's episode about "Simpsons did it" with Butters was pretty much spot on. They did it all, now they have to compete with everyone else...and their own daunting legacy. No other cartoon show is held to that kind of a standard. Personally, I think-as others have said the show has actually improved the past few seasons, but it's far too common to just dismiss it when the truth is that the people doing so have probably stop watching on a consistent basis. "I call the big one 'Bitey'" and my personal favorite "Why do you talk like that?" "I had a stroooooooke" I like Family guy and I watch it pretty regularly. But in my honest opinion seasons 4-12 of the simpsons, that's 9 seasons, makes anything family guy has done look like garbage, clearly a cut above. Family guy just seems to go over the top with things for the sake of going over the top with things. They're blue for the sake of blue a lot and unlike the 1st 3 seasons of the show, they no longer have jokes within the episodes themselves anymore, It's all flashbacks. And that to me is kind of lazy. Some of the stuff they do is funny, but their best is garbage compared to the Simpsons best in my opinion.

DoGood28
I don't know why everyone feels the need to hate on it so much. It sounds really juvenile and unappreciative of the fact that is has been a fantastic product for so long. Get a grip you haters. Show a little respect for the show that defined most of our childhoods and gave us hilarious memories to last a lifetime.

Actually I'd have to argue that FG has always been about randomness (by way of flashbacks) and the ability to push the envelope with their offensive material, and not just about standard setup + punchline jokes which Simpsons had lived off of for so long. You're talking about two different kinds of humor, and you're wrong to say the FG writers are being "lazy" for having randomness in their shows as of late, because frankly, any FG DVD owner will tell you, they've been doing it since day one and its their bread and butter. Even the Simpsons creators with Futurama went down the "randomness" road as well, and it worked out very well for them. From my POV, it seemed that when Futurama was canceled, that randomness theme shifted back to the Simpsons.

From my POV, it seemed that when Futurama was canceled, that randomness theme shifted back to the Simpsons. I don't really agree with your assessment of the simpsons, I don't think they ever "lived off of" standard setup jokes, I'd argue that they were as much if not more random than family guy has ever been. Just because the simpsons randomness is clever doesn't mean it isn't random. Here's an example: School is trying to call home. Marge just out of the shower races to answer the phone still in a towel, yells "just a minute!" and she misses it. Then the school calls Homer at work and he races in to get the phone from another room also in a towel yelling "just a minute!"...he answers the phone: "you'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel." another between Mr. Burns and Smithers: Mr. Burns is drying off all of the greyhound puppies and one stands up on it's hind legs. Mr. Burns: "Look at that Smithers, he's standing up, it's the most adorable thing I've ever seen. You know who it reminds me of?" Smithers:"Benji?, Lassie?" Mr. Burns: "No, no smithers, a person... you know who i mean." Smithers:"Snoop doggy dog? Bob Barker? David Brenner?" Mr. Burns: "No...the person who's always standing and walking" Smithers: "Rory Calhoun?" Mr. Burns: "That's it!" That's just two off the top of my head and two of my favorite scenes. The Simpsons invented randomness they just didn't have to use flashback scenes that were completely unrelated to the current episode. I like Family guy, especially the 1st 3 seasons before they got cancelled. They actually had a fair amount of jokes within the episodes and well timed flashbacks that were funny for the most part. Now it's just a flashback cluster****. But even as good as those 1st 3 seasons of family guy were they aren't even in the same solar system in comparison to those 9 seasons of the simpsons. Futurama was another great show, better than what family guy is now, but probably a little below where family guy was in it's 1st 3 seasons. one more for the road: "talking out of turn...that's a paddlin' looking out the window...that's a paddlin' staring at my sandals...that's a paddlin' paddlin' the school canoe...oh you better believe that's a paddlin'" oh, and: Grampa: "You can't change your name! The Simpson name is my legacy to you. I got it from my father, he got it from his father, and he traded a mule for it...and that mule went on to save Spring Break." Heidenreich
I love the Simpsons, always will. I haven't really been a fan of Family Guy since it came back. The old episodes are still great, I rarely watch the new ones. I know I'm one of the few people who likes American Dad. That show cracks me up every week......
