What's the backup plan if Jason can't get it done this year?

Man, you are definitely a big JC fan. As much as I would love for him to be a star, he's most likely not. He has not shown enough so far to make that argument.

"You are your record..." as Parcells would say in so many words. I realize that Jason Campbell needs to win games to be this franchise's QB. The main point to remember is: the Redskins have been losers for most of the past 15 years. For almost that entire span, we've either had overpaid veterans, NFL journeymen, or unproven young draft picks playing the QB position. Basically only two guys, Trent Green and Brad Johnson, performed as well or better than JC in their Redskins stints, and we sent them packing to greener pastures. We need to stick with one guy for once if we're gonna rebuild this team for real. It took Joe Theismann over 6 years to become a great QB, and he's about the closest thing we've ever had to a franchise Quarterback in the last 30 years.

Saying you would take him over any QB in the NFC is about a big a strecth. Warner, Brees, Ryan, Romo sits to pee, Rodgers, Manning, Mcnabb just to name a few.

I prepared a refutation to each QB you listed there, but intstead, I'll just say that all those guys, save for the rookie of the year, have had their own struggles and each one has been counted out or criticized by their fanbases at some point in their careers. Wouldn't you prefer it if people spoke about JC in the same breath as those guys? And not after we give up on him (See: Brees, Warner)

I do think CB will be a good QB so I'm not overly concerned about our QB situation. Of course I have just as little to back-up my "feeling" as the folks saying JC is a above avg NFL QB.

Sounds like more of the same from Washington fans. When are we gonna learn that the grass isn't always greener on the other side? We had Trent Green, we bring in Brad Johnson. We had Brad Johnson, we bring in Jeff George.

Blame Snyderatto if you want, but the undercurrent of chaos generated by a "win now or else" philosophy is rampant among the fan base here. The front office is not the only entity perpetuating this state of affairs. If Snyder isn't confident in his plans, then the grumblings of a whiny fan base become influential.

They are building around our young quarterback FOR ONCE, because they've tried everything else. Honestly, we're closer to being a winner now than we were at any time during the Snyder years because of that change in philosophy. We've got a lot of holes, but we've got a good, young prospect starting at QB, a nucleus of talented skill players that have been together for a while, and a stingy defense. That's at least a good place to start.

Why not get behind Campbell for the long haul? Colt Brennan probably isn't the messiah. Free Agent quarterbacks rarely pan out. You have to have some consistency at the QB position to be a winner in this league. We are finally getting that, and most people around here want to blow it up... It's typical ES, and every team has those kinds of fans, but it bothers the hell out of me, nonetheless.

Campbell, Leftwich, and Brennan. I do not believe collins can suceed in this offence and his arm is deteriating. Leftwich is a free agent and i think he will look for a starting job but i think 2 teams will find there starters in the draft(Stafford, Sanchez) and someone will find there starter with cassel. So if we can convince Leftwich and come home take a back up job for 1 year knowing campbell is on a half season leash.

Leftwich? If people think Campbell is a bad fit for this system, Leftwich shouldn't be anywhere near it.

I like Leftwich, but what does he have that Campbell doesn't? I think their strengths are similar... Tall, Big arm, good leader... etc. Campbell is far more athletic, played in the SEC in college as opposed to the MAC, and has already been in Zorn's offense for a year. Leftwich would take more work and retooling to prepare for the WCO than Campbell did this year.

If Campbell doesn't fit the WCO, then Leftwich is certainly a worse fit, because of his technique and accuracy, both areas where I believe Campbell to be superior.

Im pretty sure leftwich is a better version of campbell with a shorter release, stronger arm, and better awareness. He was considered a top 5 pick in the 2003 draft. Yes campbell is far more athletic but he does not use it enough. Leftwich has a career 80 rating which isn't great but when you think his best reciever was a aging Jimmy Smith or Matt jones you have to give him another chance. When watching him pick apart our secondary on every big 3rd down i think he is a refined campbell. Just my opinion

Bradford and McCoy will be coming out next year and if we tank the season we could always draft one of the two. We could have two Colts battling for the starter's spot in 2010.

I was going to say the same thing. If we do poorly next year I think it will be a 4-12, 5-11 type of year so we will have a pretty high pick.

I think he's as unrefined as it gets in the NFL. His release is, on the contrary, very slow and he's got an elongated throwing motion. That and the footwork were the first things that Zorn fixed in Campbell. You can bet Leftwich would have to undergo the same kind of transformation.

To me, he's still a good prospect, but it's gonna have to be on a team with a less complex passing game. Zorn has clearly stated that Campbell has the ability to be successful in his system, and I say we give them both a real shot to back it up. 3 years together, no less.

My plan this offseason would be to work with Jason and Colt equally. In the preseason I'd give the 1st and 3rd game starts and entire first half playing time to Colt and have Collins relive him in the second half. In games 2 and 4 I'd give the start to Jason and have Collins relive him in the second half. The only way were going to know how far along Colt has come is to give him real playing time against starting Defenses. You give the 4th game to Jason as a warm up to the season. Todd Collins plays the entire second half of both games against scrubs so that he is in game shape.

When the season starts the depth chart is:

1st - Jason

2nd - Todd

3rd - Colt

I'd tell them that if Jason is injured in the middle of a game that Todd goes in but the next week if Jason can't play Colt gets the start. Todd Collins remains as the primary backup, not the starter. The reason? Todd is old and not the future of the franchise.

Midpoint in the year I'd sit the coaches down with Vinny and make a decision about Jason's future with the team. If he's playing well and the Redskins are scoring points then I start the push to re-sign him then and not wait until the offseason when his price is going to go up being so close to FA. As far as contract demands unless Jason is simply playing lights out and averging 2 to 3 TD's per game I'm offering him a similar contract that other middle tier players would get for QB's. Guys like Jake Delhomme, Kyle Orton, and Trent Edwards are good examples of the caliber of QB to grade him against I believe. If he is wanting top 10 QB money I'd show him the door. But if he's wanting reasonable money then I'd give it to him provided he's playing better then he has in the past, scoring points, moving the team, and becoming a leader on the team.

If however during that meeting the team decided that Jason is never going to be a franchise QB then in week 9 I'd call a news confrence and let everyone know that the teams moving in a different direction and going to start Colt the rest of the season. If we give Colt 8 games to show us what he's got that I believe will be enough time to know whether or not to let him start for us in 2010. If during those 8 games Colt plays like crap then we know we need another answer at QB and address it in the offseason. If on the other hand he shows promise then we know that's not an area we need to address. The only true measure of a players ability is in real game time situation. We can't afford to go into 2010's offseason with out giving him a chance.

Why do people say Zorn and Campbell are attached to the hip? Of course Zorn is going to back his #1 QB. Zorn is an ex-qb coach I'd hope the two are attached to the hip. But if Campbell is gone next year then I'm sure whoever is next in line will have the same relationship with Coach Zorn.

Anyways, I will take a winning season with Campbell anyday over a losing season just to see the guy gone.

Zorn brought it in was in large part due to the development of JC as it has been well reported. With that said, Zorn's success depends on JC. IMO, in order for Zorn to stick around if JC starts to "falter" or not progress quick enough, will be putting in Colt and hoping he really breaks out which may buy him more time. But with the league going into an uncapped year, Cerrato on thin ice, and big name HC's available next year, its hard to say what Snyder will want to do or is thinking.

Zorn was brought in here to make Campbell a success. If Jason fails, its on Zorn.

About the only way I see Zorn keeping his job here if Jason's gone in 2010 is if Colt becomes a great QB. If Colt becomes a top tier QB next year and Jason sucks the ownership could make the case that Zorn was successful with Colt and picked him so he should stay with Colt as his QB.

I disagree with this statement. If JC ultimately doesn't have the talent to succeed, than that is on his shoulders, not someone elses.

Sometimes people fail because they aren't good at what they are doing. It's cliche, but, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

I've supported JC for the past few years, but this coming season is his last chance.

No doubt, this is his absolute last chance. For me personally, JC has to get us past the 2nd round. Anything less then that, and he needs to go. Then Colt needs to get his shot. If he's garbage, we need to go after a FRANCHISE QB until we find one. We need to spend a high 1st round pick on a QB.

I beg to differ. He didn't look "superb". He looked like a guy who wasn't making mistakes, and who thrived in an offense no one had any game film on. Once the league caught up, things changed. The injury situation certainly played a part with regard to the O-line......but honestly any "superb" QB, or even an above average QB (See Big Ben) understands the pressure and can make things happen in an unscripted way, despite poor play around them. Campbell showed ZERO ability to succeed in anything but ideal conditions. For me, that's where the rubber meets the road.

What's funny is most of the die-hard JC supporters say things like......"You weren't saying all this after the first 8 games!". Well, yes I was. Check my posting history. I suggest that with the exception of a couple of games where Campbell definitely had very good performances, he's been the same guy we're complaining about all along. I said it then when we were winning and I'm saying it now. We won most of our games despite Campbell........not because of him. I'm not suggesting we need a QB who wins us every single game........but we sure as heck need one who's capable of doing that when necessary. I don't believe JC is ever going to be that type of guy.........and honestly it's unfair to ask that of him. I believe he's a very good journeyman QB who'll make for an excellent backup in the league. He'll have longevity and get paid well for years to come.......but my opinion.......and I acknowledge it is ONLY my opinion.......is that he's not a bonna-fide starter in this league. I know I'll get flamed by the JC faithful......but that is my own opinion, right or wrong.

To answer the OP's original question.........Colt would have to be tried before even thinking of spending monies elsewhere, or drafting a highly-rated QB.

Excellent post! I especially agree with the part of your post that "Campbell showed zero ability to succeed in anything but ideal conditions". I would love to see a great, character guy like JC become an elite QB, but I just don't believe his mechanics are going to change. It doesn't help that he has that major league wind-up delivery, takes what seems to be five minutes to drop back, has questionable accuracy, never audibles, etc... He hasn't proven he can take over games when the running game is struggling. Maybe with an improved line, more time for his young receivers to develop, and another year with Zorn mentoring him in the same system he can be an elite QB. With all that said, If JC doesn't evolve this year, then I think as stated above; start from within first. And if the QB's on the roster aren't the answer, then start looking at the draft, free agency, etc.

I think if Jason struggles and doesn't show improvement after 5 or 6 games next season, then I think Zorn makes the move to start Colt. For everyone who says Zorn and Jason are tied to the hip, I can partially agree; however, if Jason fails, and Colt comes in and does well I think Zorn will be able to keep his job. So I don't agree if Jason fails then Zorn is gone.

I was thinking about this exact topic earlier today. I totally disagree with the notion that if JC fails, so does Zorn, by default.

I think Zorn was definitely brought in to mentor and develp Campbell. Absolutely no doubt about it. That said.......he didn't draft Campbell and if in his own opinion, and after two seasons of working with a first round, 5 year vet, he tells Snyderratto Campbell isn't the right fit........I think they'll buy that.

Also, if he does come to that conclusion and inserts Colt into the lineup with moderate success....(or as much as can be reasonably expected from ANY first-year starting QB).......he looks like the savior. Oh and by the way.......Zorn was involved in the drafting of Colt.

Now......if after a couple of seasons Colt isn't panning out.........he'll be on a slow boat to China. Game over.
