Politico: Joe the Plumber advises GOP-ers

The only thing Mr. Werlzbacher (or however you spell it) is guilty of is asking a very simple question of Barack Obama that didn't require "nuance" or "intellectualism" to answer, yet Obama stumbled on it...

So, how's the Kool Aid?

What "Joe the Plumber" did, was to ask a fictional talking point, masquerading as a "question", and try to claim that it was not only real, but that it applied to him, personally.

He's a liar. But he was on message.

(Therefore, he's a hero of the Republican Party.)

I agree with you on quite a few issues... However, I'll disagree with your post here. There are quite a lot of people who feign pseudo-intellectualism and criticize others for being "anti-intellectuals". The only thing Mr. Werlzbacher (or however you spell it) is guilty of is asking a very simple question of Barack Obama that didn't require "nuance" or "intellectualism" to answer, yet Obama stumbled on it... All the degrees in the world will not teach you to be someone you are not, and that's what the "Joe the Plumber" story hit upon.

I really don't think for a minute that the GOP is taking directions from this guy.

They're using him for publicity. It's an prestigious line of work, with a long and glorious tradition. (movie reference.)

I think it would be a serious mistake for them to use him as an icon for the party. For example, I think that if the GOP really, really wants somebody to be an icon for "a small business man that Obama is going to raise taxes on", it would be to their advantage to actually find one. I'm certain they aren't as common as the GOP wants to try to claim, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist at all. Find one who doesn't have to make things up, and make him the icon.

So generally speaking I take it by your defensive stance that you approve of the party taking direction from this boob?

If I had to choose between him and the guys under the big white dome on the hill, it would be a difficult choice. That goes for either party, by the way...

This is why I am hugely in favor of term limits for legislators. Life-long members of Congress are utterly out of touch with the constituents they supposedly represent.

I agree they are completgely out of touch with we normal people. But this pandering PR junk won't help any of that.

I can't help but think that there are actually real people out there who do have some sense of their surroundings, and are more attuned to the real pulses of our lives than some made-for-TV sideshow.

I agree with this completely. And I find it maddeningly condescending that they seem to think we don't see right through it. This party needs leadership and direction, and they aren't going to get it with cheap stunts. In fact, as a center-leaning-right thinker, they've all but totally pushed me away, and this dog and pony show is just more evidence to me that they either are completely clueless, or totally disrespectful of the minds of the voters.

I still believe conservatism has some fine ideals, but these people that are the practitioners of it right now have all the charm and credibility of a snake oil salesman.

:D This made me laugh. Nice one.

You guys are just mad that Joe isn't a Washington Insider. He's got alot of things to say (some he may not understand). I say the Republican needs more people like Joe to advise them. Let's get Tito the Builder as a policy maker or Chuck Norris as a VP candidate.

It is not Tito the builder, for the last time the guy's name is Bob!

Seriously the Republican party is a joke, how can you defend this?

They can't, the only thing they can do is hold their nose with one hand and type with the other the talking points that come down from the mother-ship, anyone who thinks that its a good idea to have "Joe the Plumber" be a key note speaker at this GOP meeting needs to put the kool-aid down and sober up to reality.

As one poster stated, this guy is a complete fraud who stood to benefit from Obama's tax plan that he was attacking him for, and they are propping him up like the "working class hero". What they need to do is stop trying to find some party icon, and worry more about what this country really needs, because at this point they are simply writing their own obituaries.

Dude, you guys are not seeing the benefit here. Joe the freakin' Plumber is AWESOME! So is Sarah Palin.

Seriously, I have never donated money to a politician before but I will donate the max to her! And volunteer (but I'm not sure I would be able to stop laughing).

Please do.

The quicker the 46 state win Obama would get over Palin in 2012 happens, the faster that part of the party can be discredited, discarded and made irrelevant

So, how's the Kool Aid?

You certainly like to sling mud at just about anyone and everything that doesn't drink your own brand of KoolAid... Do you have to act like a rude little punk to anyone who has a thought you disagree with? I'd like to treat you with respect, but it's difficult when you are just out to insult.

Anyway, all this guy asked was.... Are gonna raise my taxes? Obama's response was about "sharing in your success"... The world knows him now as "Joe the Plumber", mostly because that's how the media painted him. He might not be certified, but if he knows how to fix a leaky faucet and someone is willing to pay him for it... Well? That makes his profession more of a plumber than most people.

Nobody would be talking about this guy if Obama didn't stumble for an answer by thumbing quickly through his "Socialists for Dummies" Guide.

The problem isn't "Joe the Plumber"... It's the fact that Obama couldn't "hide" from himself. We got a moment of truth, not politics... The "KoolAid" drinkers on the left went out and attacked the "little guy", which is a bit hypocritical if you ask me.

Seriously... How can you Democrats talk like this... Politico CLAIMS Republicans are getting "advice" from "Joe the Plumber", but you all actually VOTE into POWER people like this!!!!

So you lose elections to freaks, weirdos, and old comedians - and that is supposed to prove your party is not in trouble?

Whats really sad is your incumbents are losing to people like good old crazy Al Franken. That race should have been an EASY win. That's not good.

It is almost like you are bragging about getting be up by a handicapped kid.

Actually, IIR, what he "asked" was "I'm a plumber (true), and my boss is thinking about retiring (false), and I'm thinking about buying the business (false). Why should I do that if you're going to raise my taxes (false)?"

In short, he didn't ask a question. He told a lie with a question mark on the end of it.

And this is, according to you, a "moment of truth, not politics".

It was a staged lie. And after the lie's been exposed, you still want to claim that it's some shining moment of Real American Honesty.

Because, while it was a complete fabrication, it does fit with the fictional talking point which your chosen political party wants to push.
