With the Redskins completing their first set of personnel meetings before the Senior Bowl, Jason "The Mayor" Reid and I spoke to several people involved in the process - it includes Vinny Cerrato, all of his scouts and assistants and the entire coaching staff - to get a handle on what went on.

These were preliminary meetings to evaluate the current personnel, and no major decisions have been made. But everyone got a feel for the direction in which things seem to be headed and issues on both sides of the line were a constant topic of discussion.

The next wave of meetings will begin next week, and that's when things will start to heat up. Coaches are currently reviewing film and internal scouting reports on possible free agents. The next set of meetings will compare those players to those who are here now as the team prepares to make cuts. With free agency beginning Feb. 27, the team will lay the foundation for offseason moves during meetings with agents at the scouting combine in mid-February.

This one is chock full of scary ideas. I sure hope he is really wrong.

This one was especially sad...way to draft there, Vinny!

Third-round pick Chad Rinehart is not seen as a capable player at this point, according to numerous sources involved in the meeting, and is not projected as being anywhere close to able to replace Pete Kendall or Randy Thomas at guard. Many coaches, including Bugel, worry about his confidence and ability, sources said. He is not being counted on to produce much in 2009, and if he did it would be a surprising development. Similarly, Stephon Heyer is not viewed as a starter; he's okay for depth purposes but with Jon Jansen no longer deemed a starter, either, they need to do something at right tackle (I still expect them to draft a tackle with their first pick).

Certainly not the information I wanted to read, but it's good to at least get a look at how our coaches feel. Maybe now we'll see a little less of our armchair GM's plugging in guys like Rinehart and Heyer to start over the vets we have in there. I'm not terribly surpirsed about Heyer, he does seem to be a much better swing tackle than starter at this point in his career. Maybe another year or two and he can become a starter.

Rinehart is a bit disapointing to hear. One would think that after a complete year of NFL training he would at least be ready to compete for a job rather than already be slated for the pine. I'm not writing off our 2008 draft class, because I still like our recievers, but it certainly does not look as good today as it did last April.

It baffles me how Reinhart can't be ready to contribute. Anyway, I still feel we should draft OL, but I still would like to see us go after Jordon Gross. Fills an immeidate need, and by drafting it also adds depth at that position.

Yeah, with these comments, I think I'm leaning towards getting someone like Gross as well.

I was hoping that Rinehart could take over Kendall's spot and Heyer could benefit from another offseason to take the RT position. If those guys are strictly backups, we'll need to go after at least one good FA at the G/T position. Along with getting a guy in the draft (either with the 1st or the 3rd round pick).

I'm not surprised about Stephon Heyer. I mean, anyone who watched the Redskins over the past two years objectively knows that Heyer is not starting material. He is only marginally better at pass protecting than Jansen, but still needs help on his side. Meanwhile, his runblocking is just not that great.

Chad Rinehart, though... That sucks. He was an unknown, though I guess one could get some sort of idea what the coaches thought from the fact he was never activated.

Yup I've been on the Jordan Gross band wagon since week 10 of the season when It was obvious to everyone that knows anything about football that Jansen would be gone and Heyer was undrafted for a reason...good backup guy but not a starter. Best case go after both Gross and Peppers from Carolina we wont have the cap space to sign both but either way we have our DE opposite Carter or our new starting RT....then the draft gets easy. Its either DE or RT in the 1st and DT in the 3rd....

Then again Reinhart could come into OTA's, and camp and just wow this coaching staff. I realize at this point after reviewing everything from this season he may not be ready, but if Chad can work hard during OTA's and camp I see no reason why he can compete.

One thing I would like to see throughout this entire football team is competition. It brings out the best in everyone, and it makes guys like Reinhart and Heyer win the position battle.

this team has more holes than they know. 2009 doesn't look like it could be the Redskins year.

Me living in Harford County (Ravens country) I heard the same things from their fans last season. You have to remember the NFL is a year by year league. On paper it may not look pretty, but a couple lucky breaks, and sheer luck could get you where you need to be.

I remember the Ravens biggest weakness heading into last season was their OL. Everyone said it needed to be retooled (just like our situation) by the end of the year all of their fans were saying how it was one of the biggest strengths.

Keep the faith.

Well, a lot can happen between now and the beginning of the season, but it is disappointing. But, that can happen with the draft. Looking at his draft profile, they were suggesting that he might need a little time to develop, coming from a small school and converting over to guard.

Most of this I was expecting, tho. It is disappointing that Taylor probably won't give us a rebate on a mostly lost season, but it is a business after all.

Well how can the kid be ready if you don't give him a chance. They were foolish after the Cincy game riding it out with Kendall. The days of great O Lines are gone and it's going to take a lot mor ethan Joe Bugel to get them back

Might as well get a head start and draft a 3-4 NT to be ready for Cowher by 2010.

Man, next season it's going to be painful watching all these old guys who are, again, another year older.

When George Allen was here being called a member of the "Overthehill Gang" was like a badge of honor. Now half our our team should have retired 2 years ago and Vinny is still throwing a signing bonus at them. We need a youth movement and bad. I wonder if Bruce Smith is still out there wanting to play on Sundays.....gesh..

I think its pretty obvious the bottom is about to drop out of this whole operation next year

I don't have much confidence, at this point that we have anything better then a 5-11 team in 2009

Of course it depends on off season moves. But going into next season with practically the same o-line and little d-line improvement, I don't expect good things

Let's pray we draft well and at least solidify some spots with quality for future years.

Even if we had somebody that knew what they were doing handling our draft, it is unlikely we would get much with that 5th and 6th round pick. Maybe if we're lucky we'll get two good players out of this draft. Being realistic I'll say we get only one.

The most telling sentance to me was "Cerrato was looking for reasons for the team's 2-6 finish, which some coaches at first thought was a joke given personnel issues and the continuing age and injury problems of the line."

Cerrato, who drafted 3 pass catchers that barely contributed to the team last year, appears clueless to the needs of this organization.
