Sleeping in Airports

Reic

Recommended Posts

So I just bought myself tickets from D.C. to Toronto on December 27th, and the flight leaves at 6:55am.

I am driving to the airport on the 26th and plan on spending the night there.

Has anyone here spent the night in the airport, and if so, howd it go?

I am flying out of Dulles, and have free lodging in Canada, so I figure sleeping in the airport will be worth the night of uncomfortability.

Should I sleep at my gate or just sleep out in the walking area? I figure I will just chill out on my laptop at the gate until my flight.

You should do a live ES blog from the airport.

I would read that.

I cannot imagine planning to sleep in an airport. It's like planning to get your butt kicked.

You might rationalize how it would make sense, but in the end, it's much worse than you thought it'd be.

Ended up snowed in at the Minneapolis airport coming back from Xmas break in Jan 96. Had to stay at the airport for 3 freaking days. Sleeping at the airport is always a miserable experience.

Once when I was young, my flight to London was cancelled because of fog and I was stuck at JFK. So I grab a cab to the nearest hotel, but hell if I am going to pay three figures for a friggin hotel room for one quick night. So instead I go to a cheap hotel in NYC somewhere. It ends up being a whore house. Yeah I got a room, but it had full length mirrors on the wall and ceiling. No I did not get a whore.

Needless to say, I didn't sleep a wink.

I should have slept at the airport.

I work at Dulles and have seen many passengers attempting the process of sleep in the holding rooms.

It looks to be very uncomfortable and there is absolutley nothing to do once the concourse shuts down.

You would have to be totally wiped out to gain any rest.

The major cleaning attack goes on after hours and there is no respect for sleeping/stranded passengers.

If you were at Narita Aiport in Tokyo you could rent a day room and sleep like a baby.

but since you are at Dulles I would suggest finding a place in the non-denominational chapel and sleep there. The review below says the prayer mats are comfy. ;)

No way. That'd be pure torture. If you're going to stay up all night and you have something to keep yourself entertained that would be the only imaginable scenario where it'd be worth it. I had to try and sleep in Jackson WY's dinky little airport, in Oct of '05 with no luck and a foul mood the next day. Who schedules a conference in Wyoming in late Oct?

Dang that chapel sounds like heaven compared to the concourse.

The lady in the link sleeping on the bathroom counter was priceless:D

I would suggest driving out late and staying at a diner as long as possible, but I don't sleep much anyway.

If you're leaving from Reagan, there are comfy rocking chairs you can sleep in....I napped while waiting for my aunt to return one night.

Maybe on the unsecured side.

but once you go thru security, there are very little creature comforts after hours. (at Dulles)

Seriously, if you want to sleep then get yourself a meditation cd, something with a Zen peaceful quality to it and just lay back, close your eyes and listen to it. If meditation cd's aren't your thing, then find something that you like that is soft and will help you relax and put your brain into a delta state.

I think I may take the floor and crash out there, and sleep on the planes. I will have my laptop with me, so I will be able to blog, and i can blog from canada as well. I will be up there for my 22nd birthday and new years, so it will be epic.

How much is parking?

It might be worth it for you to get a room at the Marriott, park your car for free and take the free shuttle.
