Are you in line or on line?

So I was in line at CVS the other week. There were a long line of people snaking away from the register, and I was texting my wife to see if we needed anything else. Some big Italian guy comes up and asks "Hey, are you on line?" I thought "WTF does he want to know that for?" and I said "Nah, just texting." So he proceeds to get in line in front of me. I got pissed for a second, then it hit me what he had meant in the first place. He meant "in line."

Since then, I've heard a bunch of people around here say it the same way. For some reason it really grates on my nerves. I just want to slap people for saying it. If you're on line, you're on the internet. If you're in line, you're waiting in a queue.

Does anybody else say this, or have you heard it?

It is common in N. NJ and NYC. How long have you been there that you haven't heard it before?

First time my wife and I went to a movie and NYC, we were told to go up the escalator and stand on the line (we were there early before the theatre for our movie had started). We went up the escalator and were looking for a line that was phycially painted on the floor or something. We had to ask.

I got here at the end of the summer, so it hasn't been too long. I still get mad every time I get stuck at a red light waiting for no one, just because there's no right on red.

on line doesnt make sense....do you stand on top of the people IN the line??? I'd look for a painted line too if i was told to go stand on line

In line doesn't make any sense either. Should you just pick any place you want?

If you want to get technical, we should be telling people to stand at the end of the line. (And even more technical, the end furthest from the register.)

If you're in line, in line makes much more sense than on line. You are part of the line. You are in the line. You are never on the line (or on line).
