This was one of the burning questions after the election.

President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered. In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama.

She said Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, "bring with them a number of security and privacy concerns that come with being part of the new first family -- and the school they've selected is positioned to appropriately accommodate that."........................

I wonder if Obama would be in favor a voucher program so more parents could have the choice to send their kids to private schools.

With the added "benefit" of draining money from public schools so private institutions can choose the best and leave public schools to struggle with less money and lower quality students. Not to mention sending public money to religious schools.

Then again the end result would be the real private schools would raise their prices. Vouchers + the old tuition = new price. The newer, we'll call them B group schools will accept voucher money as tuition... and the public schools? All but dead. Nothing really changes and that enemy the GOP so hates, public schools, are a thing of the past.

Bring on latin americas education system! Hooray!

It's a Quaker school. Can Muslims do that? 4 Blocks from the White House. Interesting History.

The School Philosophy:

Sidwell Friends School is an educational community inspired by the values of the Religious Society of Friends and guided by the Quaker belief in "That of God" in each person. We seek academically talented students of diverse cultural, racial, religious and economic backgrounds. We offer these students a rich and rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum designed to stimulate creative inquiry, intellectual achievement and independent thinking in a world increasingly without borders. We encourage these students to test themselves in athletic competition and to give expression to their artistic abilities. We draw strength from silence—and from the power of individual and collective reflection. We cultivate in all members of our community high personal expectations and integrity, respect for consensus, and an understanding of how diversity enriches us, why stewardship of the natural world matters and why service to others enhances life. Above all, we seek to be a school that nurtures a genuine love of learning and teaches students "to let their lives speak."

Sounds good.

Well, we knew the Clintons were some of the smartest people who ever lived in the White House.

i thought them looking at GDS was pretty strange...

they dont exactly have a history of dealing with security from having children of high profile people in their halls. that said if i was obama i woulda sent my kids to visitation, maret, ncs or sid well... those are the best schools in the area. if anyone wants to argue that point show me a public school where you need a masters or higher to teach at.

course the whole point of sending kids that young to these schools is so that you don't have to try and get them in later down the line. (thats when its next to impossible)

It's like it's really the 90's

Lol, no kidding...it's like I've stepped into some timewarp. Yay! Not.

Well, I don't think the Obama children are going to have any problems getting into any school they want...

I don't fault the Obama's for sending their children to this school at all. It sounds like a really good school and I know if I was in their position I would be sending my kids to a private school with higher academic standards and the ability to provide better security.

It's just another funny Clinton connection, that's all.

Quakers FTW! I love this news. I almost went to a Friends school myself, but stupid local politics and family issues screwed me over. Stupid adults.

I wanted to go to the George School.

I went to Friends retreats, weekends and meeting growing up. It's one, if not the only, religious practices that make any real sense to me.

Take that **** Catholics!
