Is anyone planning on renting out their place during the inauguration week?

I'm STRONGLY considering renting out my house during the inauguration week. I'm going to wait until it gets a little closer to January before making my listing (hopefully being able to drive the price up due to people waiting until the last minute). I've been searching around to look at prices, and I've seen rentals going as high as 15k. I was going to rent my house out for 6 days/7 nights. The only thing I'm a little skeptical about is the fact that there will be strangers in my house. There is A LOT of money that can be made, so it could be well worth the risk. Those of you who are doing this or considering renting, how are you going about the payments from the renters? Are you getting paid in full, deposit, getting money dumped into a paypal account, etc? With SO many people trying to be in the DC area, why not try to profit?

A portion of an article from Fark.com

But before those visitors arrive, homeowners need to check their homes to protect themselves and their guests. Allstate insurance agent CJ Ridgely says contracts are a must. "What needs to be in the contract are the terms of the usage, it's also going to indicate how long the visitors are going to be here at the property and the length of their stay, how many people are going to be here and what items they will be bringing."

People are going to be doing crazy stuff on your bed and going through your things?

I couldn't do it.

People are literally paying 4 grand and up for small apartments in the city for one week. Make a couple months rent for having someone in your house for a week? That's worth it in my book. I can wash my sheets. :)

Looking for a place to stay for the inaugural festivities?

How about $5,800 for a week in a 7,000-square-foot house in Mitchellville? Or $6,000 for "Large Estate Style home in Montgomery County"? On a tighter budget? Maybe a New Carrollton "1 BDR, 1 bath Condo" for $200 a night would do the trick. Four-night minimum, but take heart: There's a high-speed cable modem, and smoking is negotiable.

Excited supporters of President-elect Barack Obama are busy laying plans to travel to Washington so they can witness history in the making. But first, they must find a bed to sleep in - or at least a couch or floor - and that might prove difficult, with hotels across the region rapidly filling up and enterprising residents renting out their homes for thousands of dollars.

"I've never seen a reaction like this to anything going on in the capital area," said Dave Shineman, who put his two Annapolis homes up for rent the day after the election. Within 36 hours, he had rented out both places - one for $3,500 and the other for $7,500 - for the five days around the Jan. 20 inauguration. He and his wife plan to go to Florida and watch the swearing-in from there.

I know someone putting their townhouse off East Capitol Street up for rent for the week. They may be underpricing it at $5K, because its easy walking distance to both the Capitol and to Union Station (a likely site of one of the inaugural balls). They're asking for upfront money, and a $2,000 security deposit too. They plan to move valuables out of the house before turning over the keys.

Well, it's an idea...I wonder what the market is like in Woodbridge.

Seeing that you are about 30-45 minutes outside, I'm sure people will be looking to stay in Woodbridge and other surrounding areas....There is going to be NOTHING in DC as far as places to stay....you could be sitting on a gold mine as well....I have cousins out in Leesburg who have been contacted about the inauguration...and that's pretty far out.

the article I posted earlier in the thread says that hotels in York PA are getting inquiries about the inauguration.

I think they could have gotten A LOT more.....

WOW! York, PA is getting inquiries???? That should tell yall how in-demand rooms are going to be. That should answer the question for the dude out in Woodbridge

my house (McLean) is going to be filled to the gills with freeloading relatives, friends, and acquaintancesoffriendsofacuaintancesofsecondcousins.

I have also linked up some of the last category with a couple of fervent democrats in my neighborhood… who are also putting a few people up for free.

That said… I really can’t imagine completely LEAVING my home to strangers… perhaps I would’ve considered it when I had a 1-bedroom apt, and could fit everything of value I had into a shoebox (ok, ok… into a wallet) ((( ok, ok, into my mind’s eye)))

So all these people planning to stay out in Manassas or Loudon County, etc....how are they planning to get in to/out of the city Jan 20th??

Metro and any other mass transit is inevitably going to be a jam-packed cluster-**** and I can't imagine trying to drive in to the city that day.

Paying $500/night to stay out in the boonies then going through the hassle of getting in to the city = not worth it.

If people are willing to stay in York, PA, I think they would be willing to stay in Sterling/Ashburn. It's a $40 cabride to the Vienna metro.

I don't doubt that people are willing to do it....I just doubt that some of them realize how long it's gonna take to get in to the city from those spots :silly:

They'd be better off just setting up a tent somewhere downtown
