Sekhmet728
Just a word of warning that I don't really know the contract status of all these people off the top of my head. In any case I was just thinking about the people we could trade or cut in the offseason. Some of these players I love but in the end I think we'd be better off with draft picks or some new blood. -Shawn Springs- Love this guy, but our secondary is doing well without him and he is getting old. With the acquisition of Hall, I think this may be the year Springs goes somewhere else. Best to do this while his stock is still relatively high. -Marcus Washington- Also love him, but he does seem to have lost a step or two. Blades should be able to fill in nicely for him. -Jon Jansen- We have Heyer. Jansen is old. Jansen has already lost his starting job once already. We may be able to work out a good trade to some other team. -Rock Cartwright- The guy's lost some of his mojo. We probably won't be able to trade him though, since he couldn't find anyone who wanted to sign him in the offseason. In any case, I wouldn't mind taking a guy like Derrick Williams in the draft--a good kick-off returner and PUNT returner. -Ladell Betts- His name was thrown around a lot last offseason. I think if we can draft a young running back to replace him, we could probably get a decent trade for him. -Todd Collins- I realize the importance of having a good back-up QB but Todd Collins should be traded to one of the many teams desperate for a quarterback. His value is only going to go down so we should do this sooner rather than later. What do you think? Good ideas/ bad ideas? Anyone I missed? corrupt3d
Yeah, Springs I fear is gone Washington, if he's out for the season, may have to take a paycut to stay and it may be in the backup role Jansen...I can't see us cutting him with a relatively high cap number, but I can't imagine his days as starter aren't coming to a close Cartwright - cant see him gone. Just cannot, we always think he'll be gone, but he always proves himself Betts - nah, if we can trade him for a lot of picks, maybe, but I doubt people will want to trade for him as he is rather old. Besides, he's a solid #2. Collins - nah, don't think he's gone. We still need a veteran QB presence on the team at the moment, but I do not see him playing out his contract - maybe another year, but that's it. Nor can we trade him...he's too old and no team will want him unless St. Louis comes knocking as for other people: possible darkhorses: Yoder, Rabach. bedlamVR
Actually looking at the helpful sheets on the Warpath.net (Scneed I think deals with things over there and they are usually quite helpful . I see the following as GONE Marcus Washington/ Shawn Springs/ Cornelius Griffin Why? MW and SS are getting to the tail ends of thier careers and helpfully next year is the end of their contracts so is mostly all salary . Salary is not garunteed and cutting these two would save in the region of 9-10 million off the cap . C Griff - Is not the force he once was but has been healthy . HE is not worth the $6+million cap space given we need to resign Monty and or Golsten and Evans ( none of which will be huge money stars but all will want more than they are getting right now) . We also need a 3 gap pass rushing collapse the pocket kind of guy wich is where me may go to the FA . Cutting him next year will save around $4 million, though a replacemnt may be more . I would have loved to see what Daniels could do in this role but I think he is too old and too injured to show us what he has . Then we have vets that are simply at the end of the road ... Some of these may be back but some we already have replacements in the wings . Pete Kendell (Chad Rienheart?) , Todd Yoda (Fred Davis), Karry Khambell (new blood, Fincher), Philip Daniels (too old? Demetric Evans? Rob Jackson? E James?), Jason Fabini, Reed Doughty(Chris Horton?, Sorry Reed, though he may stick with Mike Green finding the door but I don't see us not drafting another DB/Safety next year) . I would love to push Todd Collins out as well but possibly not until 2010 . The bad news is we are stuck with that right side of the line . The extentions Jansen and Thomas signed in 2006 mean that we cannot have them even retiring unless they agree to a massive pay cut . Jansen next year would account for $4.66 against the cap but would cost a whopping $9+ million to cut him, Thomas is worse $5.7 cap number but 12+ million to cut . The good news is we are not too bad against the cap . It is projected to be around $123million and we are around that now with Springs to go and no one major to resign though both Jason Campbell and Carlos Rogers will be in their final years and D Hall may want to stick around but I can see him with a $30-40 million deal over 7 years. If we do find we need more space then there is always Jason Taylor . Now if he wants to play 2 more years we could say sign him to a three year contract with a $12-15 SB which would amost cut his cap in half, OR just cut him and take a bath on that second round pick (Not all 2nd round picks work out - Taylor Jacobs anyone?) and save $8.5 that way ... All in all I think we are not in too bad shape . The right hand OL not withstanding . It will be hard to do too much there with the guys there. All that needs to happen this year is an extention to the CBA and lets keep the NFL the most exciting and watched league in the world ..
bedlamVR
I just want to add I think both SS and MW have had fantastic careers here and I think if there was a way to keep them without sacrificing our future and keeping them happy that would be one way to go . The problem becomes though you have aging stars filling up the roster in minor roles that stops young guys comming through . This has happened this year . IF Springs had have been healthy I think we would have possibly let Hall go elsewhere and kept Torrance, but Torrance had not proven himself to be better than an ailing Springs and Hall is a 2 time probowler and former starter . andyburd
Springs Washington Jansen Kendall Griff And yes ARE. He makes way too much $$$, and he is not that good, Great guy, but average at best. He will cost us a ton next season
USS Redskins
SpringsWashington Jansen Kendall Griff And yes ARE. He makes way too much $$$, and he is not that good, Great guy, but average at best. He will cost us a ton next season Nailed them all. I hate to see Springs go but he is only healthy for 6-7 games a year. Washington about the same. ARE is a great guy but not worth nearly what they pay him. IbleedBnG83
1. Jansen, but the cap hit might be impossible, he could at least be a backup in this case 2. ARE-He makes WAY too much money for his production. I feel we can find a decent 3rd WR, which is all what he is, for a lot less. 3. Shawn Spring: Too much money for being too hurt 4. Marcus Washington: Hurt too much and production isn't even that good when healthy 5. Cornelius Griffin: Too much money for production. Maybe if he could restructure. KEEP!!! Betts & Cartwright: Betts is a great backup running back who doesn't mind so and can be a full time starter as he has proven. Cartwright is invaluable at special teams. Todd Collins: We saw how losing your starting QB doesn't mean the end of the season. TO THE OP, a 37 year old QB as VERY LITTLE trade value. He is worth more to the Redskins as a backup. Kendell: Can still be a backup for Rinehart, but depends on how much.
nightbird
1. It doesn't matter how high Springs' stock is because I believe this is the last year of his contract. 2. Marcus is a baller, but his body now betrays him on a regular basis. I see Blades as more of a middle linebacker than a strong sider who can blitz, and I advocate drafting a legit strong-side linebacker in round one (unless a great RT or DT is there for the taking). 3. Jansen, again, a real hard-nosed long-serving Redskin, just can't do it anymore. Love the guy, but I cringe every time he steps back to pass protect. We can't be the aggressive offense we want to be if we have to always give Jansen help on the outside. I'm not entirely sure Heyer is a great long-term solution either, and I advocate drafting a RT for competition. 4. I don't know why you would say Rock lost any mojo. He is who he is, a wonderful special teams player, great guy in the locker room, can take a few carries in a pinch and will bust the occasional kick return. I'm not sure how much more I could ask for from my 3rd running back, and I'm not sure why you'd want to get rid of him. 5. A very solid backup RB whose pass receiving skills will only help us more as everyone grows in this offense. I think you overrate his trade value. I can't remember the last backup RB who was traded for anything. 6. Again, you seem to think teams would be willing to trade us a lot more than I do. Todd Collins played one nice 5 game stretch in 10 years, operating in the system he knew inside and out. You'd have to be really, REALLY desperate to trade anything more than a conditional 7th rounder for him. If Saunders comes back to call plays for the Rams (don't know why they'd let him though) it could be potential. But then you are elevating Colt Brennan on our roster and leaving us with no veteran backup, which doesn't add up to me. I'm worried about Kendall and Griff too...mainly worried that next year they will still be the best people on our roster at their positions. I would love if Rinehart could play well at LG but who knows. If we draft a DT in round 1 that could be the swan song for Griff.
