My grandparents got scammed....

I got a call from my grandparents this morning at 930 asking me what is going on. As you can imagine I had no idea as I was knocked out still. My grandmother mentioned something about jail which woke me up real fast. I asked her what she was talking about. Apparently, she thought I had called and said I was in jail in Canada for a DUI and I needed $3000. Someone called back a couple days later and said they were with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and said they needed $2900 for court costs. So of course because my grandparents care about me they sent it.

Basically here is how the scam works. They call up seniors and say something like "do you know who this is?" or "Can you keep a secret?" If the person responds back with a name then they go forward with the scam. My grandmother swears it was me who called. Usually something like car trouble or jail or any other emergency is what they call about. Of course they ask you to western union the money to them.

I sent the police over to their house so they could file a police report, however I don't think the Junction City Kansas police department will do anything so I will contact a friend at ICE and another at the FBI to see if they have any advice.

I am just pissed that someone took advantage of my grandparents. So everyone let your grandparents know about this scam so they don't fall for it.

As far as my grandparents go, I am glad they love me enough to send the money. But damn, did they have to think I really went to jail?

As someone who has had their fair share of legal issues and has a very caring grandmother, I immediately called her to tell her about this. While there may be nothing you can do for your grandparents, please take comfort in the fact that you may have prevented this from happening to someone else. I'm not a firm believer in karma, but life has a way of evening itself out. The scammers will eventually get what's coming and hopefully your grandparents will find good fortune.

Down here in Aust, people are getting similarly scammed via their Facebook accounts. Someone is hacking into the accounts under the guise of a friend, and saying they are stranded in Nigeria (of all places) and they need $2000 to get out.

This has been proven to be a new version of the 419 scam, so be aware of that angle as well.
