Woman arrested for killing virtual reality husband

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband's digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, police said Thursday.

The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.

She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.

Players in "Maple Story" raise and manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting against monsters and other obstacles.

The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead. iReport.com: Anger in a virtual world

The woman was arrested Wednesday and was taken across the country, traveling 620 miles from her home in southern Miyazaki to be detained in Sapporo, where the man lives, the official said.

The police official said he did not know if she was married in the real world.

I don't understand:

A man an women get married online.

HE gave her his username and password (NOW its his fault)

He divorced her online without changing his password (Idiot)

She logs into his account he gave her the credentials on and killed his guy (bitter)

She was then transported 600 miles and jailed for what exactly? Hacking would mean she guessed at his account.. he gave it to her.

Bad deal here.

Maybe not 'hacking', but unauthorized use.

I guess it's destruction of property, but if she'd keyed his car would she be in prison 600 miles from her home?

IF he gave her the keys to the car and she drove it and crashed is more of a better description. Which he did and she did = his fault.

Rule#1: Don't give out your password.

Rule#2: Your liable for anything the person does with your account

He didn't give her the keys with the expectation that she would deliberately crash it.

If you give your house key to a neighbor so that they can water the plants while you are on vacation, and they steal something, they have still committed a crime, whether or not your insurance company pays out.

I'm not familiar with Maple Story, but I know with SecondLife you can invest quite a bit of money into your virtual character, I've known people who have hundreds and thousands of dollars into their character, including land and all the personal things that go with their virtual self, so deleting his account could be a matter of theft as well.

Wow! Those people are insane! I couldn't imagine that once the character dies they are just out all of that money.

It's not hacking even if she just guess.. Well I guess it is a little, but that's a bit weak on the definition.. This chick didn't do anything wrong.

Well, anyone who would do this is a friggin' nerd.

Back in the day I used to take characters in that game "The Sims", build a swimming pool, have them get in it, then edit the pool and take out the ladder. I guess I should be arrested too!! :rotflmao:

We're avid video-gamers in our family and I've lost count of the stuff my son has done.

One of my favorites ... with Zoo Tycoon, get the dinosaurs expansion pack, build an enclosure full of T-Rex, invite the paying customers into the park ... remove restraining fence in T-Rex enclosure ... enjoy mayhem.
