Detroit might say it is not shopping wide receiver Roy Williams. Other teams say otherwise.

Detroit has called other teams as recently as Tuesday morning, ahead of the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, asking if they would be interested in trading for Williams. The Lions do, in fact, have an offer from the Dallas Cowboys that is believed to be for at least a first-round draft pick. It will be up to Detroit to see if it can get more before deciding whether to take Dallas’ deal.

The Lions and Cowboys have discussed a deal for Williams since last spring. At one point, the Lions proposed a deal that would have sent Williams to Dallas for defensive end DeMarcus Ware; that offer was quickly rejected. But the two sides have continued conversations and might not be finished yet.

The Lions have insisted that they are not shopping Williams, that nobody has called them about him. But the conversations have transpired, they are talking to other teams about him, and they are trying to consummate a deal before the deadline today.

There are two hours left to see if they can get it done.

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Jerry Jones recently shot down the possibility of making a deal for Detroit WR Roy Williams. Maybe Jerry was fibbing. Or perhaps he's changed his mind. Or maybe the Lions are feeding NFL Network's Adam Schefter misinformation to try to drive up Williams' price.

Whatever the case may be, ProFootballTalk.com has a post up about Schefter's report that the Cowboys have an offer on the table ... and the Lions want more than a first-round pick for an erratic WR in the final season of his contract.

Trade deadline is at 3 p.m. Dallas time.

UPDATE: Here's a link to Schefter's blog post about the Williams' talks. An excerpt:

Its because Owens is 35 and will not play forever. You spend a 1st on a Receiver usually takes a year or 2 to develop.

True but you figure that Williams is just talented and would upgrade you guys right away.

Here's to it hopefully not happening.;)

With Romo sits to pee being out for a month, does Dallas want Williams even more to help out the backup QB and the offense? (though Brad Johnson is good)

Dallas adding Williams would also fundamentally alter the way you defend the Cowboys this year. The Redskins gameplan of doubling TO and Whitten would be a non-starter with Williams opposite Owens.

Teams are currently risking their 2nd CB on an island with Crayton. There is no way they go man free with a big physical WR like Williams.

It would also open up the Dallas running game as defenses would be very leary of walking an 8th man into the box and exposing either of their CB's to man coverage against Owens and Williams.

If Dallas got Williams you'd have to play a safety over the top and that would mean that either TO or Whitten see's man coverage.
