33
This is not a partisan slam, however there are far more handicapped people than McCain who use the internet. Including the blind and those missing entire limbs. If he pushes this, it will backfire.

Midnight Judges
Hard to tell who's more out of touch, the 73 year old hundred million dollar guy who doesn't know how many houses he owns, or the Alaskan.
Smoot Point Really
That's for the voters to decide. Kind of like when somebody (W?) went to a grocery store, and revealed that he'd never seen a bar code scanner before. There's no Constitutional requirement that, to be eligible to be President, the candidate must be able to program his own VCR. Or even to do his own grocery shopping. But I think a lot of voters would prefer that the candidate have at least that much of a connection to their own lives. I'll argue with you here... What you say is reasonable. The problem that I see though is that the Ads standard for "out of touch" is based on a critique that "may" be explained by his physical limitations. This is why I call it a gaffe, mostly because they should really know McCain's physical limitations and stay away from all criticism that might point to his life story. Of course, McCain can produce a video today pointing to "out of touch" Obama with him talking about "guns & religion", sitting a Jeremiah Wright's Church for 20 years, or bowling less than his age. EersSkins05
It does not matter if you want Obama to win or if you want McCain to win, you have to look at the ad and see it has a big potential to back-fire.The ad shows McCain not being able to do e-mail, utilize his computer, etc. On the surface (especially to young people), it makes him look bad. What the folks who wrote this ad failed to see is that there are a large number of older folks, AARP and the like, who relate to McCain in this ad. They are the largest single voting block for one reason - they vote, period. This ad mocks them (as many of them relate to the 'computer problem'). Just my :2cents: Now this is a sensible argument against the ad. I hadn't thought of that. Good point.

WVUforREDSKINS
If this ad airs on TV and I am the McCain team, I fire an ad right back saying how Obama pokes fun at McCain's limitations due to serving our country. That is, how I would spin this. I can see your point smoot. Now if we could just get you to say Obama isn't a Muslim.

You know full well this has no relevance to his qualification or competence anymore than half the crap the Right says about Obama has any relevance. [Rant] This is what our election process has come to. Divert all attention from the actuall issues important to the well being of our country. Snipe, argue and ***** at one another instead of coming together trying to find real solutions. The display of political jousting in the Tailgate is just a small microcosm of the very sad shape of our government. Vicious
McCain is dirt old. Doesn't understand the world of today, where a computer is a necessity. Does not understand net neutrality at all. The freedom of the internet is pretty much at stake with this guy in office. Obama stands for net neutrality and has openly said this. Net Neutrality Effects You. Please be aware.
Vicious
As for the real argument using E-Mail as president is even something George W. Bush figured out is a bad idea. Presidents do not use email the security risk would be unreasonable. He does however know how to google: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/10/23/bush-says-he-uses-the-google/
Larry
"Mr. McCain: I use the Blackberry, but I don’t e-mail, I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail. I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time. We now have a phone on the plane that is usable on the plane, so I just never really felt a need to do it. But I do – could I just say, really – I understand the impact of blogs on American politics today and political campaigns. I understand that. And I understand that something appears on one blog, can ricochet all around and get into the evening news, the front page of The New York Times. So, I do pay attention to the blogs. And I am not in any way unappreciative of the impact that they have on entire campaigns and world opinion. " Sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation. Frankly, I still get ticked when my brother sends me an email or SMS message. IMO, they're awkward, difficult to use. (On my old, Sprint, phone, they were really hard to use. Now, on my iPhone, they're a lot easier to receive, but I still vind typing to be a pain.) (I'm firmly convinced that the reason my brother sends me text messages instead of phoning is because a) It pleases him to know that he's inconveniencing me, and he likes messaging because it's one-way.) No, I don't think the fact that McCain has a secretary is going to affect my vote in any way. Complete non-issue. (The fact that his standard response to anything is completely fabricated mock outrage, got old seven years ago. I've seen this bad acting job before, and I didn't buy it then.) Larry
For someone who posts on this forum so much, it is hard to see how you can be one of McCain's closest friends. You must have intimate knowledge and access to him to say what you did above (either that, or you are just talking out your A $ $). Either that, or I've seen McCain standing. Saw him move his arm. My boss could do neither of those things. (That's what "quadriplegic" means.)

They're just very careful to make sure they use the email system that doesn't keep any backups, so they can lie about what they did, later. Sarge
Oh, and about the muslim thing. Do me a favor and watch the whole clip (which I'm sure you've never done). It's quite clear what hes saying is McCain hasn't mentioned his "Muslim" faith (SARCASTICALLY), like many of the right wing blogs. He's saying the interviewer is correct and McCain hasn't insinuated Obama is muslim. The interviewer made the mistake of thinking Obama misspoke. But Obama agreed to the correction. So which is it? Did he have a freudian slip and Staffie saved his ass, or did he genuinely slip up, Steffie tried to saved his ass from his apparent goof up and Obama agreed to that? Can't have it both ways

Predicto
Hey National Review, thanks for pointing this out. McCain cannot raise his arm above his shoulder. Like all Americans, I use my computer mouse with the mousepad tied to the top of my head. If I were like John McCain I would be unable to use a computer at all as well. Baculus
There are completely disabled folks who use computers. A decade ago, I used to play Diablo with a guy that was paralyzed: I don't know how he did it, but he was a really good player in spite of his physical difficulties. I really do wish we'd have a computer literate president and one that better understands technology and the role it plays in the 21st century and beyond. That isn't to say that McCain wouldn't appoint a chief technologist in an advisory role.

Baculus
Because being a Muslim is oh so bad  Apparently, in 21st century America, it is, or at least potentially politically fatal. techboy
btw, I'm willing to bet that Richard Dawkins knows how to use email. I think you mean Stephen Hawking. That's for the voters to decide. Kind of like when somebody (W?) went to a grocery store, and revealed that he'd never seen a bar code scanner before. Not W, his father. Oh, and it never actually happened, but it's a great example how even totally false stories can implant themselves forever in the public consciousness, and completely reshape a person's public image.
