Let's see, Mr BarackoNet. You screwed up the "exclusive text message to you drones abotu your stellar VP pick, and now apparently you can't use the internet for basic research before picking on a wounded vet

Who has problems using technology again?

Yep. The day after 9/11, as part of its "get tough" makeover, the Obama campaign is mocking John McCain for not using a computer, without caring why he doesn't use a computer. From the AP story about the computer illiterate ad:

"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "extraordinary." The reason he doesn't send email is that he can't use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country. From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):

McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

Here is a good article on this ad:

Basically, a key point the article makes...

From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):

Stand up, Chuck!!!

Seriously, this campaign has way too many advisors... most of them are oblivious!

Uh, they cite the NYTimes inteview (posted at the bottom of your link) in which he says he doesn't email and hasn't felt any need to. How is the commercial wrong again?

I bet you still think he misspoke when he said "Muslim faith" in that ABC interview LOL

Do you have information that would lead you to believe he didn't misspeak and he is actually Muslim?

The Boston Herald article mentions his issues with typing. Which would obviously be a reason he doesn't e-mail, but perhaps he doesn't want to talk about the pain he feels when he does simple stuff.

Yeah, but typing is... Not only can you not "read between the lines", but you are having problems with actual text.

At my second "real" computer job, my boss (a fellow professional programmer) was a quadriplegic. He couldn't turn the terminals on (the power switch was in the back), but he knew how. And he typed his programs. (Using a stick that he held in his mouth. I hand-built a special keyboard for him so that the "Shift" key, when pressed down, stayed down (until pressed again) (so he could type the characters that needed a shift key.)

But you're obviously right. Obviously the reason why McCain himself says he doesn't know how to turn on a computer is because he's just too feeble to do so.

Hey, more faux outrage! I can't believe you righties still have any left in the storage bin, but apparently that sucker has been building for years after accusing the other side of being so hypersensitive.

Dictation is your friend when you're a senator. Whether it's an 18 year old intern or using software designed to respond to your voice, the inability to type doesn't stop thousands of Americans every day from using a computer.

(Edit- Larry kinda beat me to it with his underlined rhetoric. lol)

lol? Or how about you READ THE ACTUAL LINK THEY CITE IN THE COMMERCIAL BEFORE POSTING GARBAGE. In which he says he doesn't use email because he doesn't want to, and sees no reason to. Nothing about his physical limitations. I know it's too much to ask that people actually research the **** they post, but come on.

Oh, and about the muslim thing. Do me a favor and watch the whole clip (which I'm sure you've never done). It's quite clear what hes saying is McCain hasn't mentioned his "Muslim" faith (SARCASTICALLY), like many of the right wing blogs. He's saying the interviewer is correct and McCain hasn't insinuated Obama is muslim. The interviewer made the mistake of thinking Obama misspoke.

Just

Stop

Posting.

How is it relevant to his qualifications? It would be so nice to actually have discussions about issues than this stupid tripe.

Nice story... not applicable.

Your former boss was a programmer, therefore typing on a keyboard was critical to his livelihood. If it was critical to McCain, he would do the same. It's not, and it's not a requirement for POTUS either. The Ad was a feeble attack by Obama, and it's now a gaffe thanks to the Boston Herald article.

Is this really getting this bad?

Yes, he could probably learn to use a computer, but clearly not being able to type would be a severe limiting factor.

One of the reasons e-mail is nice is because it is quick and easy. If you have to do it by holding a stick and your mouth that really does sort of go away.

It isn't? I'm not saying the point that the commercial is trying to make is a valid one. I'm saying that the idea that McCain doesn't use email because of his war wounds (like the link suggests) is stupid.

The reason he doesn't want to is most likely tied to the issues the Boston Herald raises... BTW, this is what everyone who looks at the DrudgeReport sees now.

OBAMA PLANS SHARPER TACK...

Mocks McCain as computer illiterate...

Ad...

Boston Globe, 2000: War 'injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes'...

Let's see how this one unfolds.

That's for the voters to decide. Kind of like when somebody (W?) went to a grocery store, and revealed that he'd never seen a bar code scanner before.

There's no Constitutional requirement that, to be eligible to be President, the candidate must be able to program his own VCR. Or even to do his own grocery shopping.

But I think a lot of voters would prefer that the candidate have at least that much of a connection to their own lives.

See my post #15.

(I'd rather not type it again. :) )

OTOH, he's obviously nowhere near that crippled, either.

How many people you know who type on their Blackberry one-handed? (Can you say "half the drivers on the highway?" :) ) Is McCain so injured that he can't use either hand?

It does not matter if you want Obama to win or if you want McCain to win, you have to look at the ad and see it has a big potential to back-fire.

The ad shows McCain not being able to do e-mail, utilize his computer, etc. On the surface (especially to young people), it makes him look bad.

What the folks who wrote this ad failed to see is that there are a large number of older folks, AARP and the like, who relate to McCain in this ad. They are the largest single voting block for one reason - they vote, period. This ad mocks them (as many of them relate to the 'computer problem').

Just my :2cents:

And:

"Mr. McCain: I use the Blackberry, but I don’t e-mail, I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail. I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time. We now have a phone on the plane that is usable on the plane, so I just never really felt a need to do it. But I do – could I just say, really – I understand the impact of blogs on American politics today and political campaigns. I understand that. And I understand that something appears on one blog, can ricochet all around and get into the evening news, the front page of The New York Times. So, I do pay attention to the blogs. And I am not in any way unappreciative of the impact that they have on entire campaigns and world opinion. "

Mr. McCain: I love to read them in the print form, and the reason why I do is because so much, the prominence of the story matters. If I read a story and say, Oh my God, did you see this? But it’s back on A26, it doesn’t have the impact of what are still – even though it’s declining – what are still, what are hundreds of millions of American picking up an looking at today. And that’s why I really think that reading it is, it helps me more than, now, because I don’t read all the newspapers – I don’t see, for example, the L.A. Times every day, or the San Francisco Chronicle, or the Arizona Republic when I’m away. So we go then, of course, online, and look at them.’

For someone who posts on this forum so much, it is hard to see how you can be one of McCain's closest friends. You must have intimate knowledge and access to him to say what you did above (either that, or you are just talking out your A $ $).

I'll let the folks here decide.
