WP.com: Blache Wants D to Play Like "Wild Animals"

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2008/09/greg_blache_on_the_saints.html#more

Greg Blache has just met with the media for his weekly presser, and I'll give you guys a primer on that. (Reminder: my webchat began at 1.)

Blache lauded Reggie Bush from the onset - let it be noted I came around on this guy before chatting with Blache - calling him the best one-on-one player in the game, one of the best talents to come along in 20 years and a matchup problem for every defender in the league, be it a lineman, linebacker or defensive back.

The loss of Marques Colston means the Saints will likely sacrifice that possession receiver in exchange for more speed on the field. Ex-Skin David Patten is the talk of the defense right now, popping out of the screen on players. Blache called Patten "their home run hitter," and said his injured knee, a problem in Washington, certain seems fully healed now. Guys like Springs and Smoot continue to talk about Patten unsolicited. They all know he will be extra motivated to make plays.

I'm thinking Bush will be a big factor. With that young secondary out there, I see some poor pursuit angles being taken by Doughty or one of the rookies, resulting in big plays for Bush. The key will be the Skins' ability to sustain drives against the NO defense, in my mind. If you saw the Saints against the Bucs, you know that their defense got pretty decent pressure on Garcia and is much improved over last year.

Could be a tough game...

I think the conservative "bend but don't break" philosophy is pretty effective at containing plays, but sometimes you need to disrupt a play if you want the sticks to stop moving. Our zones are split on almost every pass, we need to do something about that. For us to defeat a pass play, we depend on a drop or bad pass. That needs to change. And rushing D is more dependent on bulk and fire up front than coaching.

Erm, the Saints' offense dominated the Bucs defense last week--and the Bucs defense is far superior to our defense and probably the best in the league. Not sure how anyone expects our defense to dominate them. If we can hold them under 400 yards, it would be a miracle.

The only hope we have is that home field advantage comes up HUGE for us and that we can play ball control offense. Their offense can't burn us from the bench. We HAVE to eat the clock up.

Edit: just to be accurate. The Saints offense put up 438 yards against the Bucs--the #2 defense last year (and I think it is the #1 defense this year by the end of the year).

godamn were ****ed. all the homers look at what this team is on paper and never on the field, no wonder they are always let down.

I don't believe that 10 days is enough time for this offense to get things together and sooner or later the defense is going to wear down from being on the field for too long. When that happens, big plays happen.

Does it take that long to get your receivers to run down the field an extra yard on 3rd down? :silly:

On the other side, a much worse Redskins defense than this one mostly shut down the Saints in 2006, who was as hot as any team at the time. It was on the road too.

I'm not saying we can replicate that performance, but that's why they play the games.

Absolutely. I actually think we could shut them down if our offense can play ball control/clock chewing offense.

The big question I have is this thing about Landry playing the box. The thing that I see swinging the game is Landry have an Int or two.

Ball control + high TOP + Landry taking away big plays and getting an Int or 2 + homefield advantage = victory. Keep their Offense off the field and when they get on there, they will be under pressure in a hostile environment and desperate for the big play and play right into Landry.

That's the only way we win. If it is shootout, we won't be able to keep up.

if the 33 year old David Patten has the Redskins defense up at night worrying about the matchup than this team has a LOT more problems than anyone thought, even after Thursday night

dont ever discount one player especially one who has a bit of experience...even the worst player on the field can make a huge play (or more) if the defense is focused on "superstars"

If Jason Taylor is not ready he needs to sit down....I would much rather have a young hungry healthy guy in than a liability... which is what JT was against the Gints.

If your not ready to push bang tackle and create havoc JT ....sit down!

Or maybe rotate in during passing situations until he is 100%. He was never that strong against the run anyway, and the reduced workload would help him recover so we could use him best.

This defense needs to play with fire again. We are missing the agressiveness and need to get that back. Starters have been banged up and not at full speed, but they will get better each week. Hope they stuff the Saints Sunday.

Yeah, having Springs back healthy will make me breathe a little easier.

Hail
