A coworker found an 8GB iphone in a supermarket parking lot and gave it to me. I'm going to charge it up and try to locate the owner. I'm pretty technologically challenged, so go easy on me.

I powered it on, and there is a "Low Battery" warning pop-up, with the option to dismiss. When I press the "dismiss" button, nothing happens.

It's plugged in now, but I can't tell if it's charging. The touchscreen does not appear to work. There is an icon that states "slide to unlock", but it's unresponsive. Is there something that I need to do get the touchscreen to work?

When I plug my Ipod nano in, it has a charge icon. The iphone initially had a low battery icon, but now it's a blank screen. Is it still charging?

Any tips, (other than, "Thanks for finding my Iphone!;)), would be greatly appreciated.

I would just take it to an Apple Store, turn it into a genius if you are honest about trying to find the owner.

Cool...that's what I'll do.

sell it on ebay

I was raised better than that. I hope that you're just joking and you don't ever lose anything of value. Remember, karma is a *****.

Probably damaged and dead.

Good luck with it.

Thanks everyone!

hold the power button on the top of the phone and the menu button on the front at the same time for 10 seconds. that will reset the phone. That may work

Thanks....an icon does pop up that states "slide to unlock", but it's not responsive.

I'll take it to an Apple store tomorrow at lunch and let them deal with it.

The Apple Store should have the owner who is registered for that particular phone in their system.

I contacted the Apple Store, and they directed me to the regular Apple corporate phone number. I called and gave them the s/n. They confirmed that it's registered to a MD address, but they don't get involved.

I was told to call local law enforcement, turn it in to them, and direct the police to call Apple Corporate Security, (408)974-1010. The guy told me that they only talk to law enforcement.

I called the police and an officer is on the way to come pick it up. (prettty good service!)

So now you know what to do if you ever find and Iphone, and can't call the owner.

UPDATE: I gave the phone to law enforcement, per Apples instructions, along with the phone #. The father of the girl who lost it just called and thanked me for returning it. Evidently, she lost it about 4 months ago and was absolutely heartbroken. At least it's a happy ending!

4 months ago, found in a parking lot, yet still have a little charge ? Hmm...

Father called, but not the girl ?

Sounds like that parent that is a good person, but not a good parent.

At least you did the right thing. Lot of work involved it seems though. Why wouldn't Apple take your number and have the owner contact you ? Hell, you are the one making all the effort.

Kudos to you bro.

It was completely dead and I charged it with my IPOD charger.

The cop just picked it up this morning, and the father called me shortly thereafter, so she's probably still in school.

Apple says that they don't get involved, but having the police call corporate security worked. (probably some type of legal thing)

It wasn't a lot of effort..just a few phone calls. I know that I would certainly want someone to do the same thing for me or my kids.

Thanks for the kind words.
