Columbus-Dispatch: Flashy Cowboys serve Browns a hearty dose of humility

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CLEVELAND—By 1 p.m. today, local radio blowhards were making heady predictions over the Cleveland airwaves. "Browns" and "Super Bowl" were being used in the same sentence.

By the time most of the 73,012 faithful had filed into Cleveland Browns Stadium for the start of a late-afternoon season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, such optimism had been tempered.

The sight of the Cowboys, stars of screen (HBO's Hard Knocks) and gridiron (13-3 in the brutal NFC East last season), gave pause. The imposing Cowboys are known as "America's Team." They might be "America's Best Team."

The arm of Tony Romo sits to pee, the legs of Marion Barber and the overwhelming talent of the rest of the Cowboys proved to be too much, too soon for the Browns, who were dismantled 28-10.

Romo sits to pee completed 24 of 32 passes for 320 yards. Barber ran for 80 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns before leaving the game because of bruised ribs in the third quarter. Tight end Jason Witten and receiver Patrick Crayton each caught six passes and combined for 178 yards.

The Cowboys were not content to grind things out. They gobbled up yardage in large chunks and executed 21 plays that went for 10 or more yards. Dallas drove through and danced around a porous Cleveland defense, racking up 487 yards.

"This is the most talented team I've ever been a part of," said Adam Jones, who started at cornerback for the Cowboys in his first game since being suspended by the NFL for the 2007 season for off-the-field incidents.

The Browns, meanwhile, plodded along, its offense punctuated by only a Kellen Winslow touchdown catch and 34-yard field goal by Phil Dawson. Cleveland totaled 205 yards.

Winslow's touchdown provided fleeting hope. It followed a 1-yard scoring plunge by Barber and tied the score 7-7 early in the second quarter. But Dallas took the lead for good on its next possession, which featured an 18-yard catch by Crayton, a 23-yard run by Barber and a 35-yard scoring strike from Romo sits to pee to Terrell Owens, who finished with 87 yards on five catches.

Barber increased the Cowboys' lead to 21-7 with another 1-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds to go in the first half.

By halftime, sun-drenched Browns fans were surly. They let loose a smattering of catcalls directed at quarterback Derek Anderson (11 of 24 passing, 114 yards, one interception) throughout the first two quarters. In the third quarter, after Cowboys backup running back Felix Jones scored an 11-yard touchdown, they were hissing wholeheartedly.

Dawson's field goal cut the Cowboys' lead to 28-10 with 10:13 remaining in the game. The decision to attempt the field goal on fourth-and-3 from the Dallas 17-yard line was met with boos.

"In that situation, if you don't make (a first down), now you don't have any momentum at all," Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. "At least by putting points on the board you have a little momentum."

It mattered little. With Barber out, Jones led a Cowboys drive that lasted the rest of the fourth quarter and ended with Romo sits to pee taking a knee at the Cleveland 13 as time expired.

It was a difficult and deflating day for the Browns, who were a resurgent 10-6 last season and have serious hopes of earning just their second playoff spot since their return to the NFL in 1999.

Things probably won't get any easier.

The Browns' schedule is rated the seventh toughest in the league. Rival Pittsburgh visits Sunday night, followed by games at division foes Baltimore and Cincinnati.

"(Dallas) is one of the best teams in the league," linebacker Willie McGinest said. "We have to get better. We got our butts kicked today, and that was a really good lesson for us. Now we know what we're up against. Not just this week, but every week. And it starts with Pittsburgh."

Of further concern is a weakened roster. The Browns already were missing several potential starters because of injuries before receiver Donte' Stallworth suffered a groin injury during warm-ups and was scratched.

Please, try to post something objective about the pukes...otherwise, no one could explain this thread as an attempt to troll...or, a pathetic outreach for love of your team on its biggest rival's board.

Please tell us which it is?

So we can see constant post bashing the Cowboys etc. etc. Then we post an article written from Cleveland saying we whooped their butts and it's trolling, because it doesnt "bash" Dallas????

If you can find an article that isn't anything but an emotional reaction to the Brown's bad game...without mentioning the devastation to their offensive and defensive units because of injuries or the fact that they were ranked 30th in defense last year, then yes, it's trolling.

Are you saying that you and other Redskin fans are the only ones allowed to post Cowboys related articles on this site? Come on, man. I think that you might need to relax.

Most of my relatives are in Cleveland-so obviously, they're die-hard Browns/Indians/Cavs fans. However-my cousin's grandfather bought her a Romo sits to pee jersey from Christmas, so it's probably not all that bad for them.

Anyhow-Cleveland has been a victim of its own hype. Granted, it's ONLY week 1, they lost to a non-AFC team, and they had some injury issues of their own(Stallworth, Jeruvicious, WLB, CB, and Olineman, and Anderson/Edwards/Lewis were coming off injuries from preseason). However-they've made some questionable moves in the offseason nonetheless, which could impact their chemistry in the long run.

Everyone give TR1 a little slack, its been a hard weekend for him....Dont make him resort back to his "Cowboys suck in December" Or "Jerry Jones is going broke" statements this early in the season.....lets just take it one week at a time, TR1 spend countless hours finding Cowboy related stories to post on this forum....many times he has stories posted on this board even before they hit several of the cowboy sites I visit...I know as long as TR1 is here I can visit this forum anytime day or night and find out what is hapening with the cowboys........
