Morton A Redskin!!!!

Maske makes it clear that the fifith is going to the Jets in his piece:

The union maintained that, if Bloch decided the voidable-years clause was a principal term, the Jets should not be given another chance to match the Redskins' offer because their one-week window to match had long since expired. Bloch agreed, and the Redskins must give their fifth-round draft choice to the Jets as compensation for Morton.

This is a major slap on the write for the NFL Management Council. One would assume that they'll be much more cautious in dispensing such advice in the future and that teams will double check with the NFLPA before making decisions based on such advice.

fs62,

I agree in that I would have preferred that Morton stay with the Jets, but why are you so down on the defense?

Certainly, there are question marks, having lost Lewis and Gardner, but the team did pick up a couple of DL and might get one in the draft, too. Edwards may prove to be quite capable in his own regard. Bowen is an upgrade (hopefully) over Terrell, who now provides good depth in the secondary (fourth CB and backup S).

While no rational person would claim that the D was a world-beater last year, neither was it just a speed bump. I don't see why it would go from solid to the toilet based on what has transpired in the offseason.

Can someone PLEASE remind me how this is GOOD?

Personally, i think the whole morton thing was a smokescreen by snyder,,, He signs this guy, the Jets swear up and down they will do whatever it takes to keep him...he 'botches' the trade with NE for a compensatory pick, and while the jets and the NFL are looking the other way, he snatches coles, and put the jets in a position to have to choose which one of the two to upset their cap with.

I think the jets may have gotten back at us on this one. Those two voidable years at the end of his contract can cause a SIZABLE cap hit. I think they purposely left it out and made Danny eat this guy.

A bad deal. I can't agree with this move being good at all. Way too much money for a kickoff returner,,, WAY too much.

I will remind that aside from his two TDs in the first game of the season, he averaged less than two yards better than Betts did last year.

Yippee Skippy.

I disagree because I think he'll be used as more than just a kickoff returner. Is he expensive? You bet, but kickoff returners are not a dime a dozen as some have implied, and if we can get some production out of him on offense as well, then he'll be worth the cash. This is one less position that we have to address now, and we've filled it with one of the best. That's how this is GOOD.

The Jets fans should be pi$$ed at their own front office, if anybody. First, Bradway tries to save a few bucks by tendering their best receiver a $1.3 million qualifying offer instead of spending $500k more to lock him up (or at least get a first- *and* third-rounder), then he tries to play fast and loose with their matching offer to Morton. The Skins are just reaping the benefits of the Jets' questionable judgement.

I'm going to check out gang green now to see if they've gotten the news yet...:)

This is great news. Now we have a legitimate threat to run back every kick and set us up for field position.

I just want to know how this will effect the crowded backfield we now have and if anyone thinks there could be chemistry issues. We have signed 4 Jets now and at first they will probably stick together just because of familiarity. Anyone wanna take a stab at what'll happen?

Sonny...back to you in a sec

2cents.....hmmmm....as a psychological profiler you need some work...

Sonny......I attended all the games last year......there was little to no pressure or pass rush except for what gardener generated. he's gone. wynn was nothing to rave about, wilkie plays when he wants to, the other guys are not frontline players....we have a weak d-line and this is going to cost us against the better teams....I hope I'm wrong...but I see us making the same mistakes on defense that we made last season on offense.......

we don't need morton...this is wasted money.....hope i'm wrong here also.........

Bloch rules Jets did not binding agreement in place

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

In a stunning move that is certain to fan the flames of enmity between the two teams, arbitrator Richard Bloch ruled Monday that the New York Jets failed to properly match a restricted free-agent offer sheet to Chad Morton, and instead awarded the prized return specialist to the Washington Redskins.

Morton

"Chad Morton is going to look great playing in burgundy and gold," an exultant Redskins owner Dan Snyder told ESPN.com amid a celebration in his office, "and I want to see how the Jets spin this one now."

Bloch, who heard the 90-minute case last Thursday, essentially upheld the contention of Morton and the NFL Players Association that the Jets erred in opting not to match two "voidable" seasons at the end of the five-year offer sheet. He found that, contrary to stances by the Jets and NFL Management Council, the voidable years were, indeed, a principle term of the offer sheet.

The ruling further bolsters a Redskins team that has been among the league's most active franchises in the offseason. New York does not have any appeal rights on Bloch's decision.

In Morton, the Redskins acquire an explosive return specialist, and a player they feel can help them as a third-down tailback as well. Washington must surrender its fifth-round draft choice to the Jets as compensation in the deal.

“ Chad Morton is going to look great playing in burgundy and gold, and I want to see how the Jets spin this one now. ”

— Redskins owner Dan Snyder

Morton, 26, is a three-year veteran who began his career as a fifth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 2000 draft and was then traded to the Jets in 2001. He has returned 114 kickoffs for a 24.4-yard average and two touchdowns. His 26.0-yard average in '02 was the league's second best. He might also return punts for the Redskins, although he has limited experience in that role. The former Southern California star signed a five-year, $7.945 million restricted free agent offer sheet with the Redskins on March 6. The last two years of the deal were voidable, meaning they would be expunged if Morton reached certain predetermined performance benchmarks.

But the Jets, who retained the right to match any offer sheet to Morton by making him a qualifying offer in February, appealed to the Management Council, essentially the league's labor arm, contesting the voidable years. The Management Council subsequently ruled that the voidable years did not represent a "principal term" of the offer and did not have to be matched.

When the Jets opted to match the offer, on March 20, they did so without matching on the voidable years. Not surprisingly, Morton and agent Leigh Steinberg filed a grievance through the NFLPA, declaring the Jets had not fully matched the offer and suggesting that the player be permitted to move to the Redskins.

That was essentially the stance the NFLPA adopted in the Friday hearing and with which Bloch agreed.

When the Jets filed their "match" on the offer sheet, they did not include the addendum, which dealt with the voidable years. Bloch said that the failure to do so left the Jets without a binding agreement.

"The Redskins have dealt straight with Chad Morton and his representative throughout the negotiations and also what transpired afterwards," said Norm Chirite, the team's counsel, who was present at the hearing. "We had a clear agreement on the voidable years and felt all along that was a key part of the offer sheet. The Jets basically ignored that key factor."

A source close to Morton said the voidable years stipulation was a "hotly contested" part of the negotiations with the Redskins. Basically, if Morton reaches the prescribed performance levels, the five-year deal will become just a three-year contract. Such a scenario will increase Morton's cap charge in the third year of the contract, the 2005 season.

Steinberg had advised his client not to sign the contract with the Jets until his future was decided by the arbitrator and Morton, indeed, skipped the beginning of the team's offseason conditioning program last week.

Morton is the second restricted free agent acquired by the Redskins from the Jets, joining highly regarded wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who signed a seven-year, $35 million offer sheet that included a $13 million signing bonus and which New York declined to match.

Washington also signed a pair of Jets restricted free agents, standout guard Randy Thomas and kicker John Hall, last month.

Officials from the teams have exchanged verbal salvos over the past few weeks and, notably, the clubs meet in the league's regular-season opener.

Many teams, if not most, have one of their active roster spots dedicated to a kick returner. I don't see why a running back has to go, especially since Morton is comletely unproven at the position.

Perhaps the Ballcoach can make do with five full-time WR's instead of six with one spending time on special teams.

I have a feeling (and I think others have mentioned this) that Morton will be used as an Eric Metcalf-type slot receiver as opposed to a running back in the Fun & Gun. This would make Watson's roster spot safe but could push a #6 receiver like Skaggs out.

Chad Morton is a good football player with excellent hands. I believe he will be used in a few different places:

1 - Kickoff Returns

2 - Punt Returns

3 - 3rd Down Running Back

4 - Wide Receiver

He was used in many different situations when he played at USC and was extemely exciting to watch (I attended USC when he was there and got to see him play firsthand). He is shifty, quick and has excellent hands.

If the Redskins use him in multiple situations, he may not have been overly expensive. Consider that we were pursuing Larry Centers again (who is often used as a 3rd down back) ... no longer require him. As well, Chad Morton offers additional depth - RB and WR.

Sure we paid him bigger dollars then perhaps is warranted, but he is a good football player and we should wait and see whether he earns the dollars that were paid.
