Giants' RB Jacobs tees off on Cowboys

August 14, 2008 9:00 AM

ALBANY, N.Y. -- It appears that the war of words between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys will spill over into the 2008 season. When last seen at Texas Stadium, Giants players were enjoying some postgame popcorn in honor (mockery) of Terrell "Getcha Popcorn Ready!" Owens.

Earlier in the season, Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton had taunted the Giants in print, which led to an entertaining verbal matchup between he and running back Brandon Jacobs.

Since arriving at Giants training camp, I've been told that several members of the organization plan their Wednesday evenings around watching HBO's "Hard Knocks" in an effort to find more bulletin board material.

Apparently Jacobs has already seen enough because he went off on the Cowboys while appearing on WFAN's mid-day show earlier this week. After calling the Cowboys an "arrogant group," Jacobs followed with this:

"I guess they won their Super Bowl rings in training camp, because they didn't win it last year," he said.

I'm not sure whether the Giants have heard about Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips referring to them as "last year's champs" during training camp in Oxnard, Calif., but I'm certain it's something they can work with. As GM Jerry Reese told the NFC East Blog on Wednesday, the Giants "play the role of the underdog as well as anyone."

Can the defending world champs play this role with a straight face?

As much as I dislike Jacobs, he's absolutely right. The Cowboys are completely overconfident and arrogant, and this from a team that hasn't won a playoff game in over a decade and whose coach is Wade Phillips
The Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in a dozen years. Their starting quarterback has never won a playoff game in his career. Their head coach has never won a playoff game in his career. Not sure where all this confidence is coming from but it is obviously misplaced.

re: "last year's champs."

Last year's champs remain THE world champs until someone takes it from them.

Geez, siding with the G-men in a pissing match. Reminds me of the Iran-Iraq war.

I don't think we're siding with them, we just don't necessarily disagree

The Cowboys seem to think they have everything already locked up this year. They are annoying me more than the Eagles usually do. I usually root for the Redskins when they play the Cowboys. I may have to root for the Eagles when they play the Cowboys too. How great would it be for the Cowboys to be 0-6 in the division? Unlikely I know, but great.

Man, saying I may have to root for the Eagles against anyone makes me sick to my stomach.

I find so many things wrong here:

1. I agree that the Cowboys are unbelievably arrogant . . . They have always been that way. It's that elitist attitude that started our hatred towards them. So here, I agree with Jacobs 100%.

2. Wade is an idiot.

3. The Giants have a serious problem with needing motivation to play. This was evident last year. And to schedule your wednesdays around a show dedicated to the boys is a bit much. Searching for bulletin board material is kind of pathetic actually. This may work for them though, as they used the underdog role perfectly to their advantage and won the whole thing. And I have no problem congratulating them for that accomplishment. But Jacobs, Pierce, and company need to stop looking for stuff to get them hyped . . . It's just sad.

The Patriots have been doing the same exact thing since their first Super Bowl run, it's not pathetic, it's psychological warfare.

I agree that the Patriots LOVE the psychological aspect of football . . . No question about it. And based on their results (as well as the Giants last year), that tactic is successful. BUT, to schedule your evenings around that to look for the material is just too much for me.

When Hard Knocks first game out I think it was the Ravens . . . and I don't remember hearing about any Steelers/Browns/Bengals looking at the show on a weekly basis.

If I were Brandon Jacobs and the rest of the Giants, I would spend my time working on my own game to defend my crown. :2cents:

I'll take a sad pathetic Champion over a happy arrogant loser any day of the week. ;)

So you hope the Redskins arn't watching a show that parades a team in the division as SB 43 champs?
