DRSmith
Just wondering how long the roster life of these guys should be, i am not talking about the kicker and punter but guys who seems to play nothing but special teams. Should these not be spots for youngs to make the team develop and then be availble to play on either defence or offense?
Mordac
I believe guys who have a talent for covering punts/kickoffs are valuable. But realistically, even if you make a spot on the roster for a guy for 2 or 3 years at the expense of depth at another position (usually WR or DB), you'll end up losing them to free agency anyway, to a team that will give them a better chance to contribute on offense or defense. I think it's a last option type of deal. If we had a guy who was almost as good on special teams, and better on O or D, they'd make the club. The 'special teams maven' job is never safe. skinfan2k
This is why Rock will not get cut. When you play both sides of special teams, including punts and kickoffs, you will make the team
Oldskool
With the limit of 53 men to a roster, there are only realistically 3 slots available for purely special teams players: Kicker Punter Long Snapper

Just how many guys do you think play special teams ONLY? All of the guys out there are on either offense or defense. IF you recall, even Sean Taylor played special teams. Then, maybe again, since you asked this question, you must not recall who is even out there.
Oldskool
How many teams keep an exclusive long snapper? Browsing through the NFL roster sheet on NFL.com http://www.nfl.com/teams, every team has at least 1 long snapper on their roster. The Eagles and Titans actually have 2 at this time, most likely competing for one roster spot.

Nobody, except the three above, will be kept strictly for ST. We've got a few guys that are ST standouts but they have all been called on to contribute on offense or defense at some point. Mordac
Man, ya'll are strict. the OP didn't say "never plays a snap on offense or defnese". Its just a question about how long a guy who is primarily known for playing teams keeps making the roster.
