twenty-eight
Spain's Olympic basketball teams have risked upsetting their Chinese hosts by posing for a pre-Games advert making slit-eyed gestures.... The advert features two large photographs, one of the men's basketball team... on a basketball court decorated with a picture of a Chinese dragon. Every single player appears pulling back the skin on either side of their eyes. http://barstoolsports.com/

DjTj
political correctness hasn't infected europe yet. There probably aren't very many East Asians in Spain for the Spanish to learn what might be offensive ... but at the same time, there aren't a lot of non-Chinese people in China that are making fun of anyone's eyes, so I'm not sure that the Chinese will even see this as an insult - most people probably won't get it. Corcaigh
Consider themselves lucky ... it's common for black soccer players in Spain to hear monkey noises from the stands and sometime have bananas thrown on the field.
SkinsOrlando
anyone remember the southpark where they play dodgeball in China and the announcers keep opening there eyes to make fun of Americans?? mjah
An ample illustration of just how much more sensitive we are in America. They shouldn't have done that, and they ought to be embarrassed and apologize for it. Morons. But if the US team did it, every kook in town would be threatening to sue them for something or other, calling for them to be kicked out of the Olympics, etc. And not just because the US team is famous already. It could be the US men's volleyball team. Imagine the media coverage. And lawyers would be sitting at the ready, just in case any of it got traction. I think the most reasonable sensitivity for this kind of thing lies roughly halfway between the coasts of Spain and the US... which unfortunately means it's drowning alone. Tastes Like Chicken
Kinda dumb to do that before the games, eh? These guys could very easily end up in the middle of some dumplings.
The Sisko
Consider themselves lucky ... it's common for black soccer players in Spain to hear monkey noises from the stands and sometime have bananas thrown on the field. Gee, aren't they overly sensitive. They should just suck it up and laugh at themselves being thought of as monkeys. See how easily that "problem" is solved? See how easily that "problem" is solved? Pretty sure that wasn't Corcaigh's point. Corcaigh, take it from me... if you don't follow it with half a dozen winking emoticons or at least a few smilies, you're just asking for a headache. The Sisko
I didn't make it at all clear but my comment wasn't directed at Corcaigh at all. Rather, it was intended as commentary for those who maintain that these sorts of things should just be endured rather than challenged. Sorry for the confusion Corcaigh.
