DMN: Injury keeping Newman out of pads, not off field

A groin injury is keeping Terence Newman out of pads, not off the practice field with the Dallas Cowboys.

Newman has become a steady companion with secondary coach Dave Campo during team drills, with the cornerback often standing on the field with his coach.

"He's making every call back there with Dave, what he would call, what footwork he would use. I'm really impressed with what he's doing," coach Wade Phillips said Saturday. "We asked him, `Hey, we know you're going to be out, we want you to study and make sure you have everything.' And he's gone another step beyond that."

Flozell Adams, a four-time Pro Bowl left tackle, and right tackle Marc Colombo were held out of the team's first practice Saturday for what Phillips called "just precautionary physical reasons, nothing more than that." Both were on the field for the second practice.

Newman sustained a slightly torn left groin Monday when he got tangled with a receiver during a play and his leg twisted awkwardly.

The team said then that Newman would be out at least three weeks. That means he's not likely to practice again until at least mid-August when the team is back at its Valley Ranch facility. Newman likely will miss at least the first two preseason games.

That hasn't kept him from being on the field. Wearing shorts and often with a towel draped over his head, Newman spends time with Campo when he's not doing rehabilitation work on the side with trainers.

"It just shows what kind of player and what kind of person he is, and what kind of interest certainly he has in this football team in getting himself better along with the rest of the guys," Phillips said. "I'm pretty proud of that."

Newman, who is coming off his first Pro Bowl season, has refused to talk about the injury.

This is the second year in a row Newman has been injured in the preseason. Last year, Newman was sidelined after the first preseason game because of a slight tear in the tissue in the base of his right foot. He missed the first two games of the regular season but still had 62 tackles and four interceptions.
