Predicto
ignorance is bliss I guess. He doesnt wish to return to the gold standard, only to legalize a backed currency to compete with the fiat. The principle is the same. Currency backed by a pile of worthless inert metal rather than reflecting the actual activity of the economy. And it's silly. the other issues you feel are :poop: simply because you desire big government as most liberals do. I know you are but what am I? Your specifics are lacking, please try again. My specifics are not lacking. I gave you three huge things right off the top of my head. Some of them have been discussed in detail in earlier threads, threads in which you yourself participated. I'm sorry, but DOCTOR Ron Paul is not the perfect genius you people have made him out to be. Your libertarian impulse is genuine and heartfelt, which is great (heck, I agree with a lot of it) but you have attached it to the wrong guy. Mooka
It is not just African American who are impacted. Young people of all races are affected. Raising the minimum wage means that employers will hire fewer people. The problem with all of these near-sighted actions by the libs is that they can't (or don't) look past the first order affects. They just think that life keeps going on as before and companies will magically just eat the extra costs of these workers. Doesn't it also mean people are making more money, therefore spending more money?
luckydevil
Yes, and there are other studies that disagree, such as Card and Krueger: Myth and Measurement: The New Economics of the Minimum Wage (1995).:whoknows: The one and only study. Oh and its methodology has been seriously challenged.
Predicto
The one and only study. Oh and its methodology has been seriously challenged. Didn't say it was correct. I'm not expert enough to judge, to tell you the truth. I suspect that there is some impact, but that it is small - somewhere inbetween these two studies. What I can say for sure is this: the Heritage Foundation and Cato institute have predicted catastrophy from raising the minimum wage at all (or even having a minimum wage), but they have not convinced me that their abstract concerns had the heavy negative impact in the real world that they thought it would. Not sure what else to say, really.

JohnLockesGhost
OK give me your check and I'll figure out something to do with it. I really just want my government to establish sound economic policy. I'd be willing to give the government $1,000 to do it.
Seabee1973
You, my friend, should have kept this to yourself... choosing not to make us all aware how little you know about the subject. The federal govt. makes more off a gallon of gas than the oil companies. I think if I remember correctly, oil companies make .08 cents a gallon of gas... and the federal and state govt. makes upward of .40 cents. Who's squeezing the consumers' pocket now? Maybe the govt. should "pay us for once". Liberalism and Socialism..the enemies within. Combioned state and federal profits last year or teh last year it was published was oil companies off of Gas made 600 billion combined state and federal take was 1.1 trillion

ChocolateCitySkin
I understand the economics, I AM an economist. Your last sentence is the key. People HAVE to pay for the gas. Its gone up 400% in the past 10 years, we still consume it at record levels. Exxon CAN just pass it on, just like they do the current taxes on the product. The caveat is foreign companies that sell gasoline in the States likely wont be subject to a windfall profits tax. That will put Exxon at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace. So the other consequence of Obama's plan is to handcuff an american company (that is mostly owned by individual american investors) in favor of foreign companies. So thats real smart. someone knows more than buffet :nana:

I took out loans for my school, and will be paying them back for years.
SUSkinsFan
I have said before and I will say it again. A windfall tax is absolute bull****. The market is just going through a downturn and will rebound within the next 18-24 months (purely my estimate). People need to just leave it alone. Prosperity
clever About as clever as droning on about evil government incessantly, without ever attempting to specify, or at least recognize that the government does a lot of good. I mean do you really expect to say that smaller government is ALWAYS the answer, and be given some sort of credence? Sometimes you need government, other times society has already set up efficient institutions. It is recognizing which is which that is helpful. and yes, I am directing this comment at the "small governenment conservatives" and the libertarians Man, you just crushed that straw-man.
