Riggins quiz: Hail to the Redskins

"Riggins quiz: Hail to the Redskins";Thursday, July 31, 2008

At least that will be the case this weekend. Two former Redskins stars, Darrell Green and Art Monk, will be enshrined Saturday. Joining them will be former Chiefs cornerback Emmitt Thomas, who spent nine seasons as a Redskins assistant coach.

The Redskins also play the Colts in Sunday's annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. With that in mind, McFarlane Toys, along with the Pro Football Hall of Fame, created a limited-edition figure for one of Washington's all-time greats — Hall of Famer John Riggins.

Only 3,000 of the figures of Riggins in action have been produced, and they will be sold this weekend at the Hall of Fame. Visit mcfarlane.com for more information on the figure.

The Repository has been giving away some this week, concluding with two more today.

To win the Riggins figure, answer these Redskins-related trivia questions correctly and e-mail the responses to chris.beaven@cantonrep.com by 9 a.m. Friday. For help with the first five questions, look in today's Repository for special sections on Monk, Green and the rest of the Hall's Class of 2008.

The two people with the most correct answers will win Riggins figures. In case of a tie, a random drawing will be held.

Winners will then be notified and asked to pick up their prize within a week.

Good luck.

1, In addition to his work as a receiver, Art Monk also was noted for his blocking. Who were the four Redskin running backs he helped have 1,000-yard rushing seasons?

2, Darrell Green was part of the remarkable 1983 draft class, which has produced six Hall of Famers. Who are the other five?

3, Five defensive backs were drafted ahead of Darrell Green in 1983 when the Redskins took him 28th. Who were they?

4, Art Monk set a Syracuse record for catches in a game in 1977. How many catches did he have and who was the opponent?

5, Which Redskins team record does Darrell Green not hold — most career interceptions, most career interception return yards, most career interception returns for TDs or longest fumble return?

6, Which member of Notre Dame's legendary "Four Horsemen" served as Sammy Baugh's presenter in 1963?

The extra point

Who were the four Ohio State Buckeyes taken in the first round of the 1971 draft when the Jets took John Riggins sixth?

Tuesday's winners and answers

Eighteen people correctly answered all seven questions Tuesday. The winners were Tony Swartz and Scott Arnold. Here are Tuesday's questions and answers.

1, Which finalist for induction this year served as John Riggins' presenter when he entered the Hall in 1992?

Paul Tagliabue, the NFL commissioner.

2, Riggins entered the Hall during a five-year run from 1990-94 when six running backs were enshrined. Who were the other five running backs during that stretch?

Tony Dorsett, Leroy Kelly, Walter Payton, Earl Campbell and Franco Harris

3, Which NFL All-Decade team did Darrell Green make, the 1980s or 1990s?

4, When Art Monk caught 106 passes in 1984 to set the NFL single-season record, whose mark did he break?

Charley Hennigan of Houston caught 101 in 1964. Hennigan set his mark in the AFL, but it was recognized as the record Monk broke. Johnny Morris of the Bears set the NFL record, also in 1964, when he caught 93 passes, so we also accepted that answer. Several of you astutely provided both men as the answer.

5, The Hall of Fame lists six modern-era (since 1946) running backs as fullbacks. Who are they?

Jim Brown, Larry Csonka, John Henry Johnson, Marion Motley, Joe Perry, Jim Taylor

6, Three men with ties to the Redskins entered the Hall of Fame in its charter Class of 1963. Who are they?

Sammy Baugh, Earl "Curly" Lambeau and George Preston Marshall

7, The Redksins had just three first-round picks from 1969 to 1990. Who were they and in what years were they drafted?

Art Monk, 1980; Mark May, 1981; Darrell Green, 1983.

Sorry it's so long. Thought some of you would be interested in this.
