Campbell's Play Action

This is a pretty minor detail in the grand scheme of things, but I figure, with another two months of offseason to kill, it merits some discussion.

One thing that's always bugged me about Jason's mechanics is that his play action fake couldn't fool Helen Keller on a foggy day. Some quarterbacks seem to put a lot of emphasis on really, really selling their play action moves, but Campbell usually barely moves his arm out from his body for a split-second, often while he's not even close to the back, before returning to a passing stance. Any defender whose view of the backfield isn't completely blocked will be able to see what's going on; and if a defender's view of the backfield is completely blocked, they're probably reading the blocking like they should be, anyway.

As far as I know, Zorn hasn't mentioned this when talking about adjusting Jason's mechanics. Am I the only one who's concerned at all? Every defender will occasionally peek into the backfield, and it seems to me that consistently sloppy play action fakes will cost us an advantage several times per game.

I recall seeing footage of Seahawks practices, and the play-action fake was stressed over and over and over. If Zorn learned anything or picked anything up while being under Holmgren, this should be one of them. Being a former QB himself should help additionally. I'm not overly concerned.

That's very encouraging.

The odd thing is, you'd think a perfect play action fake would be the first thing that they would have hammered into Campbell at Auburn, given the running game they had there.

I completely agree with you OP; Campbell's fakes are just plain awful. But I think a lot of it has to do with how much TIME it takes him to bend down for the (fake) handoff, then stand back up to his full height.

Zorn has been preaching about how JC should be "smaller in the pocket" so he can speed up his release. By bending his knees a little, not standing up straight, and keeping his elbows inside his body while he drops back, JC will dramatically improve his quick release, his accuracy, and his evasive abilities.

I believe this change in his pocket stance will help him correct his play action flaws as well. It will be much easier for him to move in and out of his throwing stance.

Me thinks this stuff about JC being too tall to be a top flight QB is alot of BS. If he has to alter his stance ... crouch down ... and play from an unnatural (to him) position ... he will never succeed. He is being set up to fail. He will be gone by 2009.
