Report: Edwards rules out VP slot

‘I won't do it again,’ former senator tells Spanish newspapers

The Associated Press

updated 7:17 a.m. ET, Fri., June. 6, 2008

MADRID, Spain - Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards has ruled out being Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket, according to interviews carried by two leading Spanish newspapers on Friday.

"I already had the privilege of running for vice president in 2004, and I won't do it again," Edwards was quoted by El Mundo as saying. El Pais, the country's other leading daily, carried similar comments.

Edwards, who ran for vice president under Sen. John Kerry four years ago and was a presidential candidate in this year's U.S. Democratic primaries, had been named as a possible running mate for Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Calls by The Associated Press to several Edwards aides went unanswered and independent confirmation of Friday's reports was not immediately possible.

Edwards praised Obama as a "visionary," the El Mundo interview said.

"We don't live in a dream world and we have a lot of work to do," Edwards was quoted as saying in comments the newspaper translated into Spanish. "But Obama's potential is unlimited."

He will help campaign

Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, was quoted by El Mundo as saying he would do anything possible to help the Obama campaign other than joining the ticket.

He also had kind words for vanquished Democratic hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose supporters have suggested she and Obama would make a "dream ticket" if the Illinois senator selects her as his running mate.

But Edwards said only Obama could make such a choice, and he urged him to pick somebody who shared his goals and governing style.

"Hillary Clinton is a great force in the Democratic Party and in the United States, whether she aspires to the vice-presidency or to another position," he was quoted as saying. "She is an extraordinary woman, and the role she will play depends only on her and Sen. Obama."

While in Madrid, Edwards met briefly with Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and other senior officials. He spoke Thursday to a U.S. business group in Barcelona.

Edwards dropped out of the presidential race in late January following a spirited — if underfunded — populist campaign in which he pledged to stand up for the poor and powerless against corporate interests.

Both Obama and Clinton vigorously sought his endorsement, but he chose to stand on the sidelines until May, when he finally endorsed Obama.

Obama claimed the mantle as the likely Democratic nominee on Tuesday after the final primaries in Montana and South Dakota. Clinton is expected to formally concede on Saturday.

Obama will go up against another U.S. senator, John McCain of Arizona, in the November vote to succeed President Bush.

Was anybody really suggesting him?

I'd like to announce that I am withdrawing my name from consideration as well.

This is way more upsetting to me than Edwards' announcement. I have to say I didn't see this coming.

I wonder who Obama will have to "settle for" given Kilmer17's spirit-crushing withdrawal.:silly:

My gut tells me Jim Webb...

I could be wrong though...

Jim Webb would be a mistake. If he wants to make inroads with conservatives using a VA politician, Mark Warner would be the choice. But, I am hoing John McCain chooses him. I know, I know. A mixed ticket is my pipe dream. :(

But it is still my dream.

Rendell has more skeletons in his closet than Michael Jackson.

You simply cannot ascend to high political office in Philly without the stink of corruption all over you. He would be a PR disaster.

I like Webb and Warner, but I think Webb is a little too new to the scene and bit too hard-assed to really draw in many independents. Warner should definitely be given a shot...he has a good record, charisma, likeability.

The Dems are really focused on VA this year too...nice for a change.

You pretty much can't even drive through Philly without getting the stink of something or other all over you.

its funny how you can turn down a job you had virtually no chance of recieving.

i'm thinking Rendell will campaign hard enough for Obama to win PA without him being on the ticket.

i think he takes Strickland from Ohio, or Webb. if Mark Warner wasn't virtually guaranteed the senate seat, i'd love to see him on the ticket. i was hoping Warner decided to run for president this election cycle to be honest.

Could "didn't deliver his home state for himself" could get Gore crossed off?

Oh, this is definitely a case where the employer is allowed to consider just about any factor he wants.

Now, as to should it get him crossed off?

IMO, no. What that result indicates is that maybe Gore isn't a good candidate for President. But I haven't seen anybody claim that he'd be a bad Vice President. (And I'd point out, he came real close to being President.)

Not at all. He wants to cross his name off the list before someone else crosses it off for him, so it looks like his decision.

Also, even if he were named Obama's running mate, imagine if Obama lost the election? Edwards would then be a two-time loser as a running mate. I'd say that would be a career ender right there. No one would want to touch him with a 90-foot pole, and he knows it.

Webb doesn't seem to be interested in the slot. He feels like he'd do more good where he is right now.

As others have said, Warner is going to get the Senate seat. Anyways, Warner doesn't address Obama's main weakness, which is a lack of experience.

A friend of mine suggested that Sam Nunn would make a good running mate. He certainly would answer the "experience" questions.

I agree completely. I was just kidding with you.

I think Edwards would be loathe to run as VP again. Being a VP candidate is a stepping stone to being a presidential candidate, win or lose. He wants the presidency in 8-12 years or so, and losing on a second ticket as the VP candidate probably would be the kiss of death for that dream.
