So, posters in this thread:

I have a . . . no, not a dream. A theory.

My theory is: The folks who like Obama, think he'll win a debate. The folks who like McCain, think that he will.

Let me know: How right am I?

i don't really think the debates even matter that much -- after bush trounced kerry...

and given the fact i didn't think Bush even debated... more hunched of the platform and thumbed his nose at kerry and then made goofy faces whenever kerry said anything.

it was enough to win reelection.

maybe the debates can be broken down into: who acts cooler on camera.

Oh, as I understand it, the conventional wisdom is that nobody wins a debate, but it's sure possible to lose one.

(Bush was real lucky he had three debates against Kerry, because he sure lost the first one.)

Has Obama officially announced he is going to renege on his pledge to go the public financing route?

Neither side has engaged in that, McCain is trying to raise money through the RNC where donation limits are much less strict and much higher. Neither side is pushing public financing right now.

A Lincoln-Douglas style debate would be a disaster for McCain, Obama would be in his element and wouldnt have to try to force soundbites. I am glad Obama proposed this and I hope McCain accepts.

Anybody feel like explaining exactly what it is that makes a debate a "Lincoln-Douglas" one? They gonna stand on the back of a train? :)

I think it's when both candidates speak for three hours without cessation sans notes or teleprompters or at the minimum actually respond to each the question and each other's points instead of regurgitating the best laugh lines from their respective campaigns.

Looser rules and allowing the candidates to speak for a few minutes on each side alternating. It allows the candidates to get into some depth on their views and also allows each side to directly address the other side.

I think all this belief Obama is better may be misplaced, Clinton challenged him to more debates and he seemed to shy away from this, could it be he is not good and others more in the know realize this?

Nope, he rejected Clintons calls for more debates because there had already been over 20 and she desperately needed air time as she was running out of money.

Uh, the debates I've seen, there's been a severe shortage of laugh lines.

If these are the best comics our system can come up with, then this system's broke.

(Idea: We need to start lobbying for John Stewart to host a debate. Candidates will be judged based on their sense of humor.)

Hmmm...

That would seem a definate plus for the liberals. After all, Obama would have all the screenwriters in hollywood and a majority of comics to write his jokes.

McCain would have Rush and Dennis Miller.

Then again, I can't remember the last time TV was really funny, so it may be a push.
