Tulane Skins Fan
Obama just called on McCain to do a debate in front of 17,000 people! And then they are gonna play a game of basketball afterwards for the presidency! Seriously, i'm sure they'll have one town hall type debate. DRSmith
Inpromptu debates without moderated prescreened questions may tend to favour an experienced politician, I think WV would make a good setting since it seems to have been a state of much importance in this election

Predicto
The key is to make your debate demands specific and as early as possible, so you can tell your supporters and the media that your opponent is dodging you, and any negotiations about the form of the debates is cowardice, etc. McCain wins this round. Lombardi's_kid_brother
If I am Obama, I want to be on a stage with McCain as often as I possibly can and I want as many unscripted moments as possible. Look young and virile and engergized and just wait for McCain to call someone the C-word.
HOF44
I think if I was McCain I'd say the less debates the better for him. Unscripted debate moments are right in Obama's wheelhouse.

If I were Obama, I'd agree. But, I'd say that they should be allowed to move around the stage all they want. Obama would go back and forth quickly and standing tall. McCain, god bless him, doesn't look right moving around while holding a mic.

DGreenistheBest
Yeah, I tend to think a McCain Obama debate series is going to favor Obama as he can talk up anything and make it sound good whereas McCain is lucky if he actually says what he means to in an unscripted situation. @DCGoldPants
If I was the VP, or Prez. I think my teeth would be nicer than Will Smith's. How do people let them get some mangled? I take that back. I googled "perfect teeth" and Hillary came up..... Hillary Duff.

PeterMP
The more Obama is on the record with the better for McCain. If he has to state his opinion on issue in a forum where people are paying attention, more people will think -'Well, I don't agree with that. Maybe I don't like this guy as much as I thought.' In addition, the more on the record he is, the more "appearant" conflicting statements or "clarifications" he'll have to make (e.g. his original statement about HIM meeting with people morphing on negotiating w/o pre-discussions, but starting at lower levels). For McCain, lots of those types of things are already out there. McCain needs to balance that out, which will diffuse a lot of the excitement around and might disillusion some of his supporters (especially younger voters). Couple that with Obama is ahead and will likely win minus any big missteps (and missteps can't happen in controlled scripted environments), it is a good move by McCain. Watch the Obama campaign will minimize direct interactions between them (unless McCain starts to catch up).

The only hope McCain has in this setting is that expectations will be so low that if he even looks mildly ok it could be a boost for him.

McCain is not as slick but he is far more experienced so you are not hoping to win them over you are instead setting up the other guy to make mis statements. You also remove the prescripted questions that he has been prepped on and you may get more a feel what the man really thinks on things To me this is McCain stating i am willing to be the maverick and say the unpopular thing and stand by it are you? I guess it could go that way, but I see it as a pretty big risk for McCain. It sets him up for 2 things that would be rough for his campaign. He could get into a stammering forgetful moment that he does have sometimes, or could lose his temper and appear angry or vindictive, which he is famous for doing. Tastes Like Chicken
McCain and Obama should each have 90 seconds to demonstrate their ability to operate CNN's "magic wall" electorate map thingy. That thing is SWEET. I want one.

If you believe you have the better guy, sometimes you have to put him out there and let him prove it (espeically when you are behind from the start, and the sitting President of your party has an approval rating in the 20's). Tulane Skins Fan
Apparently Obama responded to this and said that he's down for a town hall style debate, but wants less restrictions than McCain called for, saying he wanted something "along the lines of the Lincoln-Douglas debates." ha.
