For all those saying that a Blu Ray 360 is coming out, it isn't. There have been many rumors about that but Microsoft themselves always say that they are BS. Here is the latest denial from May:

Face it, it's not going to happen.

And yes Natty, the PS3 is the best Blu Ray player to get. It has the most features,is among the cheapest and has the best support and updates. And get the Sony remote, it makes things like fast forwarding much easier. It is a must have for anyone who watches Blu Ray movies. Get a cheap HDMI cable from monoprice.com as well. The best thing about the PS3 is that it will upscale all of your DVDs as well and even stream video from your computer. When it comes to being a movie player there is nothing that compares to the PS3.

Also, I highly recommend getting Planet Earth on Blu Ray. That will really show off your HDTV. Absolutely jaw dropping stuff.

Bump

CNET recommends the PS3 too.

I had seen some reviews that the PS3 showed some lag during movie play back where there is a lot of motion. Has anyone experienced this?

Yeah I have been doing a lot of research and it keeps coming back to the playstaion 3. Just wish the 40 gig was fully backwards compatible.

Guess I will have to keep the playstation 2 around in the entertainment center for those drunken guitar hero nights

We were N64 and xbox before 360 and Wii, so we don't have that issue. Looks like we don't have a reason to add the PS3 to the mix.

None here. We've watched plenty of movies, Blu-Ray and DVD, and never seen any lag.

You know what's funny though? Your question reminded me of a dream I had, in which my HD Cable went all screwy and I was seeing all of these interlacing lines in the picture. And I was PISSED.

I had to think twice about that to remember it was just a dream, before replying to your question.

I love that damned PS3. I can't even believe how cool it is.

I'll be picking up my PS3 and some blu-ray titles this week and I can't wait.

Can anyone tell me how good the picture is on DVDs that are upscaled? I am going to convert most of my library over the next year but not all of it.

The PS3 will upscale standard DVD's to 720P. You have to use an HDMI cable for the upscale to work.

Also I have never experienced lag in watching DVD's or Blu Ray on the PS3.

You could just grab the 80 gig model. It's PS2 Backwards Compatible and I believe they're in stock again.

I'm pretty sure the PS3 upscales to 1080p as well. I have a 1080p plasma and some of my quality DVD's look VERY good. You can tell they're not Blu-Ray but they are basically as good as you could hope for and provide a fantastic picture.

I think most people say sound is a bigger advantage for Blu-Ray than even picture quality.

You are right.

If you don't have a decent sound system to go along with your HDTV then your really missing out.

Sony 6.1 receiver with Klipsch 5 speaker set along with a spare speaker as the 6th and a 100 watt sub-woofer...

My neighbors are going to hate me...

Yeah, I really need to upgrade my current Dolby 5.1 that's about 10 years old. It doesn't play DTS, that's my main gripe. It will play the Dolby TruHD in 5.1, but for the movies that have DTS master audio, I'm f'd. I have to watch DTS master audio movies with Dolby Pro Logic, which really blows donkey.

I'll have to save up for something here soon. I'd like to just buy a new reciever with HDMI inputs and 1 output for the TV, but I've got a problem there as well. My speakers that go with that system are 30 watts each and the powered Sub is only like 50.

Anybody know of a good system complete with speakers and a sub? A few musts though... 1. Needs to have speaker connections used on Aiwa and Sony products, I already have speaker wire run of course and don't want to have to do it again. 2. Sub needs to have a single RCA plug. 3. Needs to have HDMI inputs (at least 2) and one output of course.

Oh and price, below $400 if at all possible. I live in an apartment and I don't need anything super extravagant.

Probably something along the lines of, "My $&%* 360 just broke again."

My PS3 broke too... so I can't downtalk the 360. Although it was a little bit my fault. NEVER ENCLOSE THE PS3 IN A CLOSED ENTERTAINMENT CENTER. PS3 doesn't like too much heat, end of story.

I took a look at the PS3 today. The 40GB version comes with a composite cable.

They won't even provide a component cable? You have to be kidding me.

I forgot they didn't provide a component cable. Luckily I had an HDMI sitting around and had purchased a fiber-optic audio cable earlier in the day.

And may I say that the sound is absolutely incredible on with that cable and a surround sound system.

Quick question for anyone that owns Casino Royale. In certain scenes the background sound goes up and down and it really annoying to me, does anyone else notice that. It does it on blu-ray and standard DVD.

Is your TV 720 or 1080? I'm curious about the difference between the two...

720 as it's only a 42" and set 8' away. I mounted it to the wall, which was a SUPREME pain in the ass, but looks pretty cool.

I've been told that you need to buy a tv at 46" or bigger and/or sit really close to tell the difference between 720P and 1080P. I preferred to buy a nice brand of 720 over a 1080 crappy brand. The 1080 Westinghouse, Vizio and Dynex brands looked like garbage compared to my Samsung...not that I'm some TV snob or anything.

Don't buy the PS3 40GB version!!! You will be wasting your money. In August they will be replacing the 40GB versions with the 80GB versions, for the same price of $399. This was announced @ E3. Now I just have to wait until August to break my PS3 so I can get an 80 GB version.
